Like everyone else, I started out writing with crayons and then pencils. And I was still writing primarily by hand (with a pen) through high school because there were no other viable options. Writing by hand all those years definitely made me a more thoughtful, methodical writer. To change a word, or re-cast a sentence, you had to cross something out, or use white-out, or use maybe rip up your paper and start over. But there were other lessons I learned along the way.
