Ecological Footprint ๐Ÿฆถ
โ €
According to the World Wildlife Foundation, our ecological footprint is defined as โ€œthe measure of human demands on Earthโ€™s natural resources.โ€ ๐ŸŒŽ
โ €
Here are the 7 facts about our reckless use of natureโ€™s limited resources ๐Ÿ‘‡
โ €
๐Ÿ”ธ UNโ€™s Food and Agriculture Organization has reported that in the next 40 years we would have to produce as much food as we have in the past 8000.
๐Ÿ”ธ US food waste volume equals 91 Empire State Buildings. Americans consume only half of the food they buy and the rest goes to waste. Often visitors from other countries notice that American portions are too big and itโ€™s not always possible to fully consume a food product by โ€œsell byโ€ date.
๐Ÿ”ธ China and India populations doubled in only 12 and 17 years respectively, while it took the UK 155 years and the US 53 years to achieve the same. The world population is increasing at a high pace and the growth of developing markets will help to address poverty and hunger, but the global community must not forget about the future consequences of such growth.
๐Ÿ”ธ 70% of the world population will be living in the cities by 2050. People who live in the cities consume more water and meat consumption in comparison to the ones living in rural areas. Simultaneously, one-third of the world's population is already impacted by water scarcity for at least one month each year, and this number is growing.
๐Ÿ”ธ We rely far too much on corn, soybeans, wheat and rice which take up around %75 of global food production. One major change in weather caused by the ongoing climate change can negatively impact the supply. This will increase the prices and cause starvation. As an alternative, we could add more variability to our diets by adding cassava, sweet potatoes and amaranth.
๐Ÿ”ธ Shrimp is the most valuable type of seafood consumed by Americans. Marine wildlife is harmed by exploitation and overfishing and responsible shrimp farming could help preserve our oceans.
๐Ÿ”ธ Every minute, we lose 36 football fields of forests. Such loss is caused by unsustainable forest practices. Organizations like FSC and REDD create regulations on how to sustainably manage forests that are used in production.
โ €
We are proud to state that our cutlery is made from FSC certified wood. This means that ECOWOOD Store does not exploit the riches of Ukrainian forests and harms their unique and vulnerable ecosystems ๐Ÿ€

How environmentally friendly are plastic cutlery alternatives โ“
โ €
We are all aware that plastic, a popular and versatile product in today's world, is a major source of pollution and has no place in nature ๐Ÿ˜” With this knowledge, there has been significant public pressure on consumers and businesses to seek out environmentally friendly plastic alternatives, such as compostable plastic and bioplastics. While both are promoted as sustainable alternatives, the reality is that they are not. The 3 most commonly used alternatives to plastic are:
โ €
๐Ÿ”ธ Biodegradable Plastics
๐Ÿ”ธ Bioplastics
๐Ÿ”ธ Recycled Plastics
โ €
๐Ÿ”ฐ Biodegradable plastics, also known as photodegradable or oxydegradable plastics, are those that can be decomposed by living organisms, most commonly bacteria. Petrochemical plastics are used to make biodegradable plastics, which typically degrade into harmful substances that are unsuitable for composting. These can also leave a toxic residue behind.
โ €
Plastic made from recycled plastic materials is referred to as recycled plastic. In other words, these are products that are repurposed to create something new. While this is a great way to keep a product out of the landfill, the collection and recycling process still consumes lots of resources.
โ €
๐Ÿ”ฐ Bioplastics are synthetic materials derived from natural sources such as corn starch and sugar cane. PLAs made from polylactic acid, also known as polylactide, are now widely used in the production of food containers. While bioplastics are sometimes compostable, they frequently require high temperatures on an industrial scale and thus will not degrade in conventional landfills.
โ €
๐Ÿ”ธ When biodegradable plastics decompose, they emit methane gas, which contributes to the global warming problem.
๐Ÿ”ธ Some PLA products are made from genetically modified corn, which is harmful to the environment. This corn is also grown on land that could be used to grow food for the rest of the world rather than plastic.
๐Ÿ”ธ Many biodegradable and bioplastics require high temperatures or UV light to decompose, which takes many years and frequently leaves toxic residue and micro-plastics behind.
๐Ÿ”ธ Growing crops for bioplastics consumes natural resources such as water and fuel, and results in greenhouse gas emissions as well as water pollution from fertilizer run-off.
๐Ÿ”ธ PLAs are difficult to recycle and cannot be mixed with true plastics in a household recycling bin.
๐Ÿ”ธ There is no truly compostable bioplastic or biodegradable plastic.
โ €
๐Ÿ”ฐ Edible cutlery
A few businesses have developed edible disposable cutlery, which is a great idea for specialty catering. Given the massive amount required to supply the daily needs of the food service industry, they would not be a viable solution to replace plastic disposable cutlery because they have the same drawbacks as PLAs: 1. they use food that could help reduce world hunger and 2. unless made from truly organic ingredients, their environmental impact produces more harm than good.
โ €
Is There a Better Compostable Alternative? ๐ŸŒฑ

Fortunately, bioplastics and biodegradable plastics are not your only options for replacing plastic. Wood is a far superior material to bioplastics. Here are a few of the reasons why:
โ €
๐Ÿ”ธ Wooden utensils are 100% renewable because they are made from fast-growing trees like birch. And it doesn't take as long as you might think to replenish the supply; some birch tree strains mature in as little as 12 years. It is a common misconception that wood products are harmful to tree populations. Wood is one of the most environmentally friendly materials available. It absorbs CO2 as it grows and provides a habitat for wildlife. It is critical, however, to use only raw materials sourced from responsibly managed forests, as EcoWood does.
๐Ÿ”ธ Wooden cutlery is also entirely natural. There are no chemicals used in the manufacturing process, so there is no chemical impact on the environment.
๐Ÿ”ธ Wooden utensils are completely compostable and decompose in approximately 90 days. More importantly, they can be thrown into a compost bin or pile at home or in the backyard. They do not require an industrial facility or a special process to degrade properly, as PLA utensils do.
๐Ÿ”ธ Wood cutlery, when composted at home, helps to create nutrient-rich soil that can be used to fertilize and grow other plants. You'll never have to be concerned about plastic bits in your compost again.
โ €
Wood utensils are the answer ๐Ÿ‘Œ
Just because bioplastic utensils are advertised (and even certified!) as compostable does not mean that they have no environmental impact. It is clear that the impact has been significant. However, there are far fewer environmental consequences associated with wood utensils than with bioplastic utensils throughout their entire life cycle.
โ €
Until other products are developed, the only sustainable alternative to plastic disposables is wood cutlery ๐ŸŒณ

Wooden dinnerware and cutlery as an alternative to plastic ๐Ÿฅ™
โ €
We've been dealing with the coronavirus pandemic for nearly two years ๐Ÿฆ  The virus has harmed not only humans but also nature. The reason for this is an active measure to prevent the virus's spread, such as replacing everyday items with disposable plastic ones.
โ €
Businesses have begun to use plastic wherever and whenever possible. Public catering has taken the lead by multiplying the daily use of plastic tableware and cutlery. It has undoubtedly aided in the prevention of the virus's spread, but it has also left a massive ecological footprint ๐Ÿ˜” The volume of plastic waste has increased significantly, and not all of it is recyclable.
โ €
Polymers decompose for at least 100-200 years and emit toxic substances when combusted โ—๏ธ As it turns out, by solving one problem, we create another that is equally important.
โ €
However, there is a way out! ๐Ÿ‘‰ Replacing disposable plastic items with those made of pure, biodegradable wood that do not necessitate costly recycling methods. Cutlery made of wood is a great alternative to plastic. It is functional, aesthetically pleasing, tactilely pleasing, and, most importantly, environmentally friendly. The global community can prevent the spread of the pandemic while also caring for the environment and reducing the use of disposable items.
โ €
๐ŸŒฟ ECOWOOD Store produces disposable wooden tableware and cutlery from birch wood famous for its durability. It is also perfect with high temperatures and freezing. Our birch wood grows in an ecologically clean region of Ukraine and is processed on the most modern equipment. Our products are unique in their qualities and pleasant to use.

Is the carbon impact of wood products good or bad? ๐Ÿ‘‡
โ €
Another reason why wood is regarded as an environmentally friendly material is that it acts as a carbon sink. This means that wood absorbs carbon and stores it within its structure ๐ŸŒฟ Carbon remains in the wood until it is destroyed. As a result, disposable wooden utensils have a carbon-neutral lifecycle. A similar amount of carbon dioxide is stored inside wooden utensils as is released during their manufacture.
โ €
Birch and bamboo can absorb more CO2 than they emit when processed into utensils in some cases. They do, in fact, reduce the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere ๐ŸŒณ When compared to plastic, this makes wood a very environmentally friendly material. Birch, for example, traps approximately 48 kg of CO2 per 1 kg of biomass.
โ €
Carbon is eventually released when a wooden utensil is discarded. However, unlike carbon produced by the combustion of fossil fuels, it is not released directly into the atmosphere. Instead, the carbon is either consumed for energy by other organisms and slowly released as CO2 into the atmosphere, or it is trapped in the soil. Overall, CO2 will return to the atmosphere, but at a much slower rate than burning fossil fuels ๐Ÿ‘Œ
