Editing is often described as an attention-to-detail profession, but that only tells part of the story.
The strongest editors aren't simply looking for mistakes. They're looking for patterns.
A repeated formatting issue may point to a workflow problem. Inconsistent terminology might reveal that multiple contributors are working from different sources. A confusing paragraph can signal that an idea hasn't been fully developed, even if every sentence is technically correct.
Over time, editing becomes less about fixing individual issues and more about recognizing how those issues connect.
That's one of the reasons editing is so difficult to automate. Experience teaches editors to see relationships, not just errors.
