Alaska joined the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact in June. That takes it to 44 states, plus Washington DC and Guam.
For a physician who qualifies, the Compact is the difference between filing the same application over and over and filing once through a single point of entry. More than 200,000 licenses have gone through it, and over 3,600 were issued in a single month earlier this year.
It isn't automatic and it isn't right for everyone. Eligibility runs through one state of principal license, and the paperwork still has to be correct.
