THE BATTLE OF WEST PLAINS - Here's a bit of Civil War and West Plains history to investigate on a cold winter's day: The only confrontation between Union and Confederate regulars in Howell County occurred 163 years ago today on February 19, 1862. Six Confederate infantrymen were killed, eight wounded, and 40 taken prisoner. There were no Union casualties. The population of West Plains at that time was 150. By 1863 West Plains was burned to the ground by guerrilla fighters. This marker on the west side of the courthouse lawn, in the West Plains Downtown Courthouse Square Historic District, commemorates the event and provides additional information about the skirmish.

For a deeper dive into the battle, read Lou Wehmer's excellent article based on the documentation which exists in the Union's "Official Records of the War of the Rebellion" taken from field reports and correspondence created during the war. ***SCAM ALERT***

Today the Howell Sheriff's Office has received multiple calls regarding jury duty, from residents of Howell County. These calls are from scammers.

A "Sheriff's Office jury duty scam" refers to a fraudulent phone call where someone impersonates a Sheriff's Office employee, claiming you missed jury duty and threatening arrest unless you immediately pay a fine, often using scare tactics to trick people into providing personal information or sending money; this is a scam and you should never provide any details or payment to such callers as legitimate courts and law enforcement agencies will never ask for payment over the phone to resolve a missed jury duty issue.

If you receive a call from these scammers, hang up on them. You can also call the Howell County Sheriff's Office for verification if you are unsure at 417-256-2544.

DO NOT PROVIDE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE AND DO NOT SEND THEM ANY MONEY OR GIFT CARDS.
