Hand cane chairs, these chairs have holes drilled around the edge of the opening, I weave a seat pattern using these small drilled holes. Pressed cane has a grove routed around the opening.This cane is a machine cane that comes in any size you need, they are pressed into the grove, glue is added and a spline is pressed on top of the glue to hold the cane in the groove. Splint is a wide binder cane

from very small to One inch these are weaved in to a pattern, there are about six to seven different patterns to follow.You see a lot of these in old porch chairs and rockers. Fibre Rush is a brown twisted paper that comes on a 40 pond reel, this is a
continues wrap around the two side bars and the front and back bar. All seats can be stained to match the chair, but to be honest this does not take well it is best to let it discolor on its own as it ages. A hand cane seat can last up to 20 years, a pressed cane about 10 years, splint and fibre rush seats cane last up to 50 years, all depending on usage.

These two very old chairs have smoked splint seats using a nine step weave. I do not know the history of the chairs but the scoring at the joints show that they are definitely antiques. The shorter one was a rocker at one time, but the rockers had been removed. They both had been refinished at one time for there are traces of red paint. I hope that with care, these chairs will be around for another 100 years.

The Taylor Company was founded in 1816. This was a family run company for seven generations and the oldest business in Ohio. By 1879 the company produced forty different styles of single and double seated cane chairs.
In the 1950 and 60's the company expanded their product lines including chairs, sofas and tables.
Sadly they closed in 2012.

This chair was originally a rush seated chair, there is normally a few screws in the back frame, enabling the caner to remove the screws to pull the chair either foward or lift the frame from the chair. But as some vintage chairs go through the ages, repairs were made to the chair sinking more screws into the sides and back making it impossible to open up the spaces to replace the rush. So, I had to get creative, and decided to weave a splint seat onto the chair. It was definitely a challenging chair.

As I was weaving a new seat and back onto this old porch rocker, I got to thinking about the importance of these types of rockers. They are heavy and can be quite large, these chairs lived on old deep porches inviting friends and neighbors to come sit, enjoy a cool drink, have a bit of gossip or just rock slowly catching and creating a cool breeze, taking a relaxing moment before continuing on with your day. These rockers were made to withstand heavy rain storms and strong winds. They were painted green, yellow, white or blue. Architect styles changed as new homes were built, porches were removed and people stopped taking the time to sit taking a few minutes of their day to relax, rock and wave to your neighbors. It's nostalgic but sad to think that humans of today have lost this part of community just because porches and old rockers weren't welcomed into their new and improved busier than ever lives. I grew up in an old home with a deep front porch with rockers to be sat upon, having so many good memories of being with family, neighbors, friends, making plans, reading, and even watching it rain.

A little bit of history:
These chairs are roughly 170 years old. Built by William C. Cotting, he was a cabinet maker, owner of the Cotting Chair Factory located in Pittsford Vt.
William C. Cotting was born in 1808 in Ashburnham MA. As a young man he moved to Pittsford VT, becoming a cabinet maker. Married in 1833. Buying a local home, his shop was created on the first floor of the home while living on the second floor, opening Cotting Chair Factory.
All his chair designs have little k***s at the top of the back leg rails, with slightly curved back rails which makes the chairs comfortable to sit upon.
The Cotting Chairs are out there, so if you ever run across one for sale I'd recommend buying it. You'll have a little bit of local VT made historic furniture to sit upon. Look for the little k***s on the top.

At my home, the dining room table and chairs is the most used pieces of furniture from parties to family gatherings to friends dropping by, I use my table as a desk, where I sit and read, play card games, even now as I'm creating this post. But this isn't about the table it's about the chairs my guests sit upon. I own a variety of antique chairs there is hand caned seats, pressed and rush chair seats. They are sturdy and very comfortable to sit upon for hours. Don't you hate going somewhere and your butt hurts sitting on an old hard chair after an hour. My point of this whole ramble is to encourage everyone to use your dining area as much as possible and to go and buy those older well made antique chairs with weaved seats. Check second hand stores, auctions, estate sales all may have a sets of chairs. They may need a little TLC to bring back the beauty of the chair, but it's so worth it. Besides you want your guests to have comfortable bottoms when they visit. They may just stay awhile.

This is a Larkin chair, mass produced and given by the Larkin Soap company located in Buffalo NY.
If you bought bulk or large quantities of soap and household goods you were recived coupons or vouchers to redeem for furniture, chairs tables, dressers or curio cabinets. This was such a popular program, that the Larkin company started selling the furniture. The company was open from 1890s to1920s employing up to 2,000 employees.
In the 1980's the Larkin Chairs were so sought-after that the price of the pictured chair went for $800 to $1,000, now worth $50.
