Thank you Mayor!
Recently, Mayor Johnson from Agawam and I were guests of the West of the River Chamber for our annual Mayoral Breakfast. We had the chance to update the membership on what’s happening in our communities and take questions from local business leaders.
I shared an update on the continued rollout of Whip City Fiber, which now has more than 700 residents connected and plans for ten fiber service area construction projects a year over the next few years to offer fiber to all residents who want it.
We also discussed several major infrastructure projects, including the Memorial Avenue reconstruction, which is expected to be completed early next year, and the Riverdale Street project, which will likely extend through 2029. I also touched on the regional bike connection that will link West Springfield with the Westfield and Easthampton bike paths.
Like many communities, we are facing a very challenging budget year. The School Department is facing significant cuts, and we are reviewing budgets across all departments as we work to maintain services while remaining fiscally responsible.
I also provided updates on the new police station, which will be built on the former Walgreens property next to Town Hall, and the early planning stages of the Fausey Elementary School project, which will be constructed behind the existing school and will consolidate the John Ashley kindergarten program.
Finally, I highlighted three priorities for 2026:
• Road safety initiatives, including the complete reconstruction of Main Street using Complete Streets principles, the Piper/Amostown “Peanut” Roundabout, and the Birnie Avenue sidewalk extension from Morgan to Kelly, along with culvert replacements on Green Meadow and Birnie.
• Kicking off the Master Plan 2050 initiative with members from across the community that will evaluate what’s been completed from the 2009 Master Plan and where we want the community to be in the next 25 years.
• The creation of a stormwater utility to help protect our roads, homes, and businesses from the increasing impacts of storms and flooding in a community surrounded by two rivers and served by an aging stormwater system.
