So, what was the highlight of my weekend?

Was it doing a loop the loop followed by a barrel roll in an open-air cockpit biplane Friday morning with Amelia Rose Earhart? Super memorable, but no.

Was it learning the Tummo Breathing Method from the Fear Guru and jumping into an ice bath that caused me to hyperventilate until I suddenly became incredibly warm and present? Amazing, but nope.

Was it jogging on the beach 1 on 1 in the backdrop of the Aquinnah Cliffs with Laval St. Germain. Spectacular, but nah.

Was it listening to Valerie Alexander talk about the evolution of the female and male brains over the past 2 million years and how that has impacted society, work, and relationships (I could have used this talk 10 relationships ago btw)? So insightful, but nada.

How about the group painting exercise in the garden Saturday night led by Amelia Rose Earhart? Something out of a movie, but nope.

What about listening to Tim Grover, Melinda Wittstock, Geoff Woods of The One Thing, Marquis Taylor, or Dr. Alla Murabit bring the house down with amazing presentations? Nope, no, sorry, cool, but no, nope, and nah.

The highlight of my weekend was the relationships I was able to form with the speakers and attendees. It was the 1 on 1 discussions I had with people on the lawn, under the tent, in the restaurant, in the car, on the beach, and on the pool deck. It was meeting a group of strangers at the beginning of the weekend, and then feeling like they were my best friends by the end of the weekend. It was feeling completely bummed out when everyone left the island, and then feeling incredibly happy from the dozens of individual texts and group texts I’ve received since the event with genuine offers to visit people all over the world. It was like summer camp for grown-ups. I’m certain I just made several lifelong friends as a result of Relentless MV and that was the best part of my weekend.

These new friends are doing big, big things too, and they’ve inspired me to do the same.

Hiring “A” players and plugging them into a strong culture is the most important ingredient for business success in my experience.

”What do I mean by “A” player and a strong culture,” you might be thinking?

“A” players come in many different forms and there is no single magical attribute to look for; however, one thing I found they all share in common: a history of overachieving. It could be overachieving in sports, academics, sales, or life in general, but “A” players make the most of their circumstances and opportunities. Why? Because at their core, they are incredibly self-motivated people.

As far as culture is concerned… a strong culture is more than ping pong and beer on Fridays. It’s about creating shared purpose and shared experiences, which form trust. A culture forms when a group of individuals come together around a certain set of values and beliefs. Company culture starts with the executive team and the tone they set. I am a big believer that good energy attracts good energy. In this context, if you’re an executive then ask yourself, “as a leader, what kind of values, beliefs, and energy am I attracting from the people I am hiring?”

I was talking with my mom in the car recently and I told her that when I completely believe in what I am selling, I become a lot less "salesy" and a much more effective sales person. Not long after that conversation I re-read “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek. Absolute must read for anyone, particularly executive leaders and sales people.

I couldn’t agree more with this quote. A potential client is buying YOU as much as whatever product or service you’re selling. If you don’t believe in what you’re selling then why should they? People can sense when others are being authentic or not. Authenticity is when you do and say the things you actually believe. It’s the first question I ask my clients with respect to their sales process, “Do you and your team truly believe in what you’re selling?”

Option Number One In Two Weekends

Your friend: “Hey- How was your weekend?”

You: “It was good. Hit up the bar Friday for a bit. Almost got a number. Got some errands done and saw a movie Saturday night. Low key Sunday reflecting on bad decisions. Good brunch though and watched GoT/Netflix at night. Made me forget that I had to go to work the next day.”

Option Number Two In Two Weekends

Your friend: “Hey- How was your weekend?”

You: “Unbelievable! I flew around Martha’s Vineyard in a biplane with Amelia Rose Earhart Friday morning. Listened to Michael Jordan’s trainer, Tim Grover, give the best motivational presentation of my life Friday afternoon, and then went to a baller party with a bunch of amazing people Friday night, and that was just the beginning. Saturday morning, Patrick Sweeney (the FEAR Guru) taught me and 50 other people how to use fear as fuel. Then he showed us the Tummo Breathing Method by making all of us sit in kiddie pools filled with ice water. Then entrepreneur and Hollywood screen writer, Valerie Alexander, taught me how to use happiness as a language. When that was done I listened to a lineup of ultra-achieving endurance athletes and CEO’s share their insights into the habits, mindset and relationships that made them so successful. To top it all off I went to a clam bake on the Vineyard Saturday night and partied like it was 1999 all over again. Never been so inspired in my life! Ready to kick the rest of 2019 in the face!

So, how was your weekend?”

Dad: “Why?”
Mark: “Because they’re beautiful and amazing.”
