A public service announcement for the season.

If you get an email in the next few weeks that looks like it is from a shipping company, your bank, or a supplier, and it wants you to click something urgently, slow down for ten seconds.

Not because you are gullible. Because these are genuinely good now, and the busy part of the year is exactly when they work.

The tell is almost never spelling. It is urgency. Something has to happen right now or something bad occurs. Real companies do not operate that way.

When in doubt, do not click the link in the email. Go to the site the way you normally would.

And if you are not sure, forward it to whoever handles your IT and ask. That is not a bother. That is the job.

Something we tell people on the first call more often than you would think.

"You do not need us."

If you have four people and a laptop each, a monthly IT agreement is not the right purchase. Buy hours when you need them. We will happily be the ones you call.

Our program has a five-user minimum for a reason, and pretending otherwise would take your money and leave you annoyed.

We would rather tell you that in ten minutes than in month four.

One of the strangest parts of this job is that when we are doing it well, you hear from us less.

Most vendors are the opposite. The more you pay, the more meetings you get.

Here, a good month is a quiet one. Alerts got handled at 3am. Updates went out on a Saturday. A suspicious login got stopped before anyone typed a password into anything.

Nobody sends you a note about the things that did not happen.

So occasionally we will tell you anyway, because "you did not notice anything" is genuinely the product.

Small thing number one for Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and it is the best fifteen minutes you will spend this month.

Turn on multi-factor authentication for your email. Everybody in the office, you included.

That is the whole task.

Nearly every problem we get called into at a small business starts with somebody's email password ending up somewhere it should not be. With multi-factor on, a stolen password is not enough anymore.

It is mildly annoying for about a week. Then you forget it is there.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and most of what you are about to see online is designed to scare you.

We are going to skip that part.

All month we are posting one small thing at a time that a business your size can actually do. Nothing expensive. Nothing that takes a weekend.

And if you have a question you have been sitting on because it felt too basic to ask, ask it here. There is no such thing as a dumb one.

Found something on your work computer you do not remember installing?

Most of the time it is boring. A tool that came bundled with something else, or an update that added a new app you did not ask for.

Sometimes it is not.

The tell is usually timing. If it showed up right after somebody clicked a link, downloaded a file, or installed a free version of something, that is worth asking about.

Here is the useful habit. Do not try to uninstall it yourself and do not ignore it. Take a photo of the name with your phone and send it to whoever handles your IT.

Thirty seconds of asking beats an afternoon of finding out.

Fall is coming and so is the part nobody plans for.

The first real cold snap does two things to an office. The heat kicks on in a room that has been closed all summer, and something in a closet that has been quietly running at 80 degrees finally gets some air. That is the good news.

The bad news is the first storm. Power flickers, everything reboots, and one machine comes back up wrong.

If your business has one computer that everything depends on, this is a good month to find out whether it is plugged into a battery backup or just a power strip. Those look almost identical and they are not the same thing at all.

We used to sell three packages. Good, better, best.

We got rid of them.

Every single time, somebody would buy the middle one, then need the thing that was only in the top one, and we would be the ones explaining why. That is a terrible conversation to have with a neighbor.

So now there is one. Everything is in it. Same for a five-person office and a fifty-person one.

Simpler for you. Honestly, simpler for us too.

Friday afternoon reminder from people who have seen it go the other way.

If you are about to install an update on the machine your whole office depends on, do not do it at 4:15 on a Friday.

Do it Monday morning, when the people who can fix it are awake and the people who need it can tell you it broke.

That is it. That is the whole tip. Have a good weekend.
