is a Canadian social-entrepreneurial consulting and training company that focuses exclusively on designing and leading participatory group processes and teaching people how to do it for themselves. The body of knowledge developed by the Institute of Cultural Affairs over the past 50 years of international community development work is known as the “Technologies of Participation” and “ToP Methods”.

This includes dozens of tools and methods plus a strong belief in the power of small and large groups of people to fully engage in the co-creation of their communities and organizations. While facilitators from ICA Associates Inc. use any group process that meets the needs of the client, they also train and mentor people in ToP Methods.

My Working Assumptions as a Facilitator

I have recently read reflections by several facilitators on group norms, facilitator neutrality, and "facilitation as manipulation". I think that this is an important topic, especially in these times. Thirty-two years ago a group of people (I was a part of it) began the International Association of Facilitators to separate the role of a group meeting leader (a consultant or content provider) who has knowledge or wisdom to present to a group, and the role of a group meeting leader (a facilitator) who has questions and process to help a group discover and create its own knowledge and wisdom....
