I built a successful bookkeeping firm BUTTTTT.....
I ROYALLY *&%$& some things up along the way. 😬

100+ clients.
A team of 12.
And eventually, a successful exit.

Sounds pretty, doesn’t it?

Here’s the part that doesn’t fit quite as nicely into the highlight reel because building a firm is HARD.

1️⃣ I tried to figure EVERYTHING out myself.

Policies. Pricing. Hiring. Systems. Technology. Client problems.

I was the QUEEN of DIY.

Turns out, just because you can figure something out yourself doesn’t mean you should.

Ask for help. Or hire it. Or both!

2️⃣ I grew too fast.

I was hungry for business.

And I said yes to clients I KNEW weren’t right because I was worried about money.

But my revenue goals were bigger than my infrastructure.

Things slipped. And I lost some really good clients because I was a mess on the backend of the biz.

3️⃣ I built systems too late.

Onboarding.
Month-end close.
Client communication.
Hiring.
Training.
Quality control.

Every. Darn. Thing. Needs. A. Process.

Simple? Yes.

Easy? No way.

But once we had systems, the chaos finally started to calm down.

4️⃣ I undercharged.

OOF. This one still hurts.

If you’ve ever done the back-of-the-napkin math and realized:

"Oh cool. I basically handed that client $10,000 because I was afraid to raise their price."

…you feel me. 😭

I left a LOT of money on the table because I was more afraid of losing clients than having difficult conversations.

5️⃣ I thought being a great bookkeeper would make me a great CEO.

HARD NO.

Bookkeeping is a skill.

Running a firm is an entirely different skill set.

Selling.
Leading.
Delegating.
Pricing.
Goal setting.
Saying no.
Making decisions.
Having uncomfortable conversations.

You have to learn how to run the business, not just do the work.

Did I eventually figure it out?

Absolutely.

But I could have built a more profitable, peaceful firm MUCH faster if somebody had taught me these things earlier.

And that’s why I teach what I teach today.

You do not have to learn every business lesson the painful way.
