Thank you to The Sullivan Company for trusting me with your annual anti-discrimination and harassment training. And for this great gift (which I am drinking coffee from as I make this post)!

Ohio employers must ensure respectful, safe workplaces, and an essential part of doing so is supervisor and employee training on harassment and discrimination.

Not only is it the right thing to do and helps assure a better work environment, but a recent change in Ohio law provides an affirmative defense to claims made if such training is provided.

Employers! Remember to extend grace to those employees affected by power outages. Some may not have resources to go elsewhere to sleep and shower so they can report to work.

Emergencies happen. Flexibility and understanding are warranted when they do.

DURING BUSINESS ETHICS CLASS LAST NIGHT, my MBA students discussed what businesses owe their employees and what workers owe employers. Part of that discussion was about promoting worker loyalty and the role of wages.

It's a complex question -- except for low-wage earners, as this meme so accurately portrays. Understanding that your workforce is not monolithic and treating it accordingly is vital. Expecting the lowest earners to embrace "values" and treat the workplace as a "family" is unlikely to work.

Best HR practices require employee handbook reviews revisions conducted regularly. Generally, an annual review would suffice.

But as we head into year three of a global pandemic, businesses need to stay alert to regulatory and legislative actions that might require more frequent updating. A good example would be when local, state, or federal jurisdictions require paid leave.

For your 2022 review, along with paid leave changes, keep in mind these areas:

-- COVID-19 Vaccination/Testing/Mask Policies
-- Remote Work Rules
-- Changes in Minimum Wage

With the recent United States Supreme Court decision blocking OSHA's Emergency Temporary Standard requiring employers with 100 or more to institute mandatory vaccination policies, some employees may be confused.

Private employers of any size always had -- and most continue to have -- the legal right to require worker vaccinations except those needing ADA accommodations or holding a sincerely held religious belief.

The recent SCOTUS decision did not change any private employer rights in this regard. However, some states have curtailed private employer vaccine mandates. Tennessee and Montana, for example, have banned employers from requiring vaccines.

Today is Women's Entrepreneurship Day!

It was just about a year ago that I launched my own business after a pandemic layoff. Although challenging, the rewards have been worth it.

Key Stats:

* Women own 31% of small businesses or franchises in the US.
* 17% of black women are in the process of starting or running a new business.
* The female entrepreneurial activity rate in the US is 16.6%.
* 14% of women-owned businesses employ between 11 and 50+ workers.
* Women represent 50% of entrepreneurs in Latin America and the Caribbean.
* 36.1% of immigrant business owners in Canada are women.
* South Asia has less than 20% of female entrepreneurs.
* Women-owned and controlled enterprises create direct employment for about 27 million people in India.
