Today is not too soon to order firewood for next fall and winter-
Prices of fuel oil and propane are rising as with gas and diesel so expect firewood to follow- now is the time to stock up on good seasoned firewood for next year and beyond!
If anyone experienced running out of good seasoned firewood 2022-2023 and also struggled sourcing more please keep some basic stuff in mind when it comes to seasoned firewood:
Firewood seasoning can be tricky in Ohio- even wood that has had a lot of seasoning time can carry some moisture with it depending on delivery conditions and general average humidity for that time of year and depending also on storage factors....
Even kiln dried wood will begin to sponge moisture out of the high humidity air and start to see its moisture levels rise and fall with humidity levels-
Also firewood demand was extra high this year with Covid so next year looks to be the same to replenish the depleted supplies at customers homes from extra use while home with family staying safe from Covid- this trend has continued for a few years and a lot of factors are driving that- mainly the fact that the larger land clearing companies have started chipping the entire job worth of logs right onsite at the clearing job and making it into mulch versus selling the logs to firewood suppliers meaning firewood log loads are few and far between-
These chages in industry have greatly changed our local firewood markets and the supply chains....
It’s always best to buy your firewood at end of winter for the next year-
If properly stored firewood seasoning will improve and create better user experience if it has that few extra months or more time to rest and further season at your property after delivery-
One good thing about firewood is that it will last a few years after purchase when stored on a rack unconvered, however when stored properly it could last many many years and get more user friendly with time-
Be sure to store your firewood in a location which is accessible for delivery team next to or near truck access points for complimentary stacking and it’s best stored dry off the ground where protected from rain and snow but the rest of your stack open allowing the elements to reach them-
After summer (when fall hits) you can then consider covering the wood a little more depending on your storage area.
Lastly and most importantly order ASAP to ensure you have good seasoned firewood stocked up for next fall-
