Beware of “We’ll Pay You to Switch” Deals

It sounds tempting when a point-of-sale provider offers to cover your cancellation fees or “pay you to switch” to their system. But what often looks like a generous offer on the surface can turn into one of the most expensive decisions your business ever makes.

Here is what is really happening behind the scenes. Many POS companies use aggressive “switch” incentives to lock restaurants into long-term contracts that include liquidated damages clauses. That means if you decide to leave early, you are not only on the hook for every remaining monthly fee, but you also owe a lump-sum payment based on the sales volume you were projected to process over the rest of the contract. For some restaurants, that can mean tens of thousands of dollars just to walk away.

Even worse, the pricing structure that seemed like such a deal at first rarely stays that way. Many systems start with an “introductory rate” that quietly doubles after a few months. Others apply the advertised rate only to a portion of your transactions, such as the first $10,000 in monthly volume, and then add higher fees for every sale beyond that. The result is that restaurants often end up paying 25 to 40 percent more per month than they originally budgeted.
