This past week, Local 2889 members Ryan Meigel and Eric Linnenburger had the opportunity to present at Fire-Rescue International in Kansas City.

Captain Meigel and Chief Linnenburger developed and presented courses on Mid-Rise Fires and First-Due Company Officer Considerations, sharing their knowledge and experience with firefighters and fire service leaders from across the country.

We’re incredibly proud of both of them for continuing to be leaders in the fire service and for representing Westminster Fire Department and Local 2889 on a national stage.

This week, leaders from Local 2889 joined firefighters and union leaders from across the United States and Canada in Arlington, Texas, for the 58th Biennial IAFF Convention.

Every two years, delegates from IAFF locals come together to discuss and debate resolutions that help protect firefighters and their families, strengthen our union, and continue advancing the fire service.

Our thoughts are with our brothers and sisters at West Metro Professional Firefighters as they navigate this difficult time. We are also keeping Jarrod and his loved ones in our thoughts, and we’re wishing him a full and speedy recovery.

UPDATE: This morning, West Metro crews were conducting high-angle rescue training in a steep, rocky area near Morrison, west of C-470, when Firefighter/Paramedic Jarrod Leonard fell approximately 50 feet.
Jarrod sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Jarrod has served the West Metro community for more than 23 years and is one of our technical rescue instructors, helping train firefighters in the specialized skills needed to perform rescues in some of the most challenging environments.
Jarrod remains in critical condition and is receiving ongoing treatment and evaluations.

Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Local 2889 members, who are a part of the WFD wildland team, have been operating at the Ferris Fire near Cortez, Colorado. They are currently working the night shift, where they have performed and supported burn operations to help secure the fire’s perimeter.

They are not the only firefighters working this holiday. Thousands of firefighters across the country are continuing to battle wildfires across Colorado and the west, while many others remain on duty protecting their own communities.
We’re proud of our members and all firefighters who are working today.

We hope everyone has a safe and happy Fourth of July!

We’re grateful for our city leaders and their continued support of our mission to protect the safety, working conditions, and pay of our firefighters.

Their partnership helps ensure our members have the resources and support they need to continue serving our community at the highest level.

Westminster recently passed a HUGE ordinance protecting our chapter of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 2889!

Prior to Ordinance 4348, Westminster has had one of the most restrictive bargaining ordinances for firefighters in all of Colorado. However, with its passage, Local 2889 is now able to bargain for retirement benefits, additional safety provisions and equipment, and give the final say in hiring or laying off workers. In addition, the negotiation process has become more transparent, with speech from Local 2889 now unable to be limited during bargaining and with full financial details being published from both sides.

This has been extremely meaningful to firefighters, and I’ve heard from folks that have been with our fire department for many years - even decades - that this ordinance has been extremely impactful in increasing their bargaining power with the city. They feel more seen, more heard, more valued, and seem more excited to work in a city that is focusing on prioritizing their safety and wellbeing.

I’m thrilled about this labor victory and cannot wait to see the future progress we’ll make in the future!

Local 2889 members operated at a recent fire at the ARC Thrift Store.

Fires in large commercial buildings present unique challenges for firefighters, and this incident required a strong coordinated response. Crews from Westminster Fire, Adams County Professional Firefighters and North Metro Professional Firefighters - IAFF Local 2203 worked together to bring the fire under control.

Great work by all crews on scene.
