These are contaminants most people have heard of. But what about monochlorobenzene?

Monochlorobenzene (MCB) is a volatile organic compound used in industrial manufacturing. It has been used to produce pesticides, dyes, paints, coatings, and other chemicals. While most people will never encounter MCB directly, it has played a role in manufacturing many products used in everyday life.

MCB is one of the Contaminants of Concern ENTACT is addressing on a 22-acre Integrated Remedial Action Measure (IRAM) project under the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s (ODEQ) Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) National Priorities List (NPL) program. The site also contains pesticide impacts.

ENTACT is using in-situ solidification and stabilization (ISS) to treat 150,000 cubic yards of impacted overburden soils. By blending the soil with engineered amendments, the treatment is designed to reduce contaminant mobility and limit the potential for contaminants to leach from the treated material.

Every contaminated site has a history, a pathway, and a reason the contaminants need to be addressed. Understanding those contaminants is an important part of understanding the work ENTACT performs.

Effective sediment remediation requires balancing complex construction activities with environmental stewardship. Material excavation, dredging, water management and treatment, sediment processing, waste disposal, and ecological restoration must all work together to safely remediate contaminated sites and support long-term environmental recovery.

ENTACT is executing an Interim Removal Action Measure (IRAM) involving sediment remediation, water management, material processing, and site restoration. The project includes excavation and management of impacted soil, sediment, and wood waste, installation of a residual management layer, wetlands plantings and habitat enhancements, and management and treatment of water generated during excavation and sediment processing.

The work addresses multiple contaminants, including arsenic, mercury, TCDD toxicity equivalents, petroleum hydrocarbons, and PAHs, while supporting the restoration of long-term ecological function. Our Associates are always looking for ways to make a difference beyond the jobsite.

On July 23, a group of 19 ENTACT Associates spent the morning with the Alliance for the Great Lakes helping clean up Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve Beach along Lake Michigan. Together, we collected litter, enjoyed time outdoors with teammates, and contributed to protecting a resource that is important to our communities.

The paper captures lessons learned from completed subaqueous ISS projects and offers practical insights for contaminated sediment remediation. Protecting wildlife while delivering complex environmental projects is a responsibility we take seriously. At this coal-fired generating station, ENTACT managed more than 315,000 cubic yards of CCR as part of a pond closure and repurposing project, while carefully coordinating work to minimize disturbances to a nearby Least Tern habitat. By balancing environmental stewardship with project ex*****on, our team helped reduce environmental risk, support long-term site goals, and prepare the site for future use.
