The great pandemic put a pause on travel and visiting colleges across the country. Turning to my own backyard, less than 4 miles away lies a true hidden gem for many: Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. Lying slightly north of Fairfield University, Sacred Heart has a very different feel than its catholic cousin. The brand new resident halls have created “Pioneer Village”. The architecture is beautiful and impactful, setting the tone for future developments. In fact 6 new buildings have risen in the past 8 years. Nursing and Business are two of the most popular areas of study, with the latter taught in the just completed renovation of the former GE headquarters. Walking around I felt the constant pull of yin and yang. Juxtaposed amongst the gothic inspired additions and the tiered grassy commons lies a real old diner, JP’s. Serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner JP’s is a favorite of students. Sacred Heart exceeded all of my expectations and definitely deserves a look.

Attending college is a privilege and often fraught with angst over many matters. One of the most important decisions your student must make is deciding which major to pursue. In my opinion this is one of the most important decisions in the college process. Deciding on a major before choosing a college is ideal. Doing so will help build a list of colleges to apply for, based on the credentials and opportunities each college offers for an intended major. The ED/EA opportunity has passed. But the regular decision deadline is looming ahead, giving students an opportunity to really ponder the direction they would like to head in after college.
