WDFW approves seven days of coastal razor clam digs beginning April 12; more digs planned through May 15
OLYMPIA, WA – Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) shellfish managers confirmed seven days of razor clam digs on coastal beaches beginning Saturday, April 12.

“We’ve had a great start to our spring season with successful morning digs,” said Bryce Blumenthal, WDFW’s recreational razor clam manager. “Hopefully that trend will continue with this next set of April digs. If you haven’t already, don’t forget to buy a new license for the 2025-26 harvest year.”

Not all coastal beaches are open for every dig, so diggers should make sure their intended destination is open before heading out. Most successful digging occurs between one and two hours before the listed time of low tide.

The following confirmed digs April 12-18 will proceed as scheduled, after marine toxin results from the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) showed razor clams are safe to eat.

The options for 2025 include the following coho quotas and Chinook guidelines for recreational fisheries off the Washington coast:

Option one: 122,500 Chinook and 120,000 marked coho.

Neah Bay (Marine Area 4): Open seven days per week from June 21, either through Sept. 30, or 10,480 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 14,330 Chinook. No Chinook retention east of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line beginning Aug. 1.
La Push (Marine Area 3): Open seven days per week from June 21, either through Sept. 30, or 2,620 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 2,400 Chinook.
Westport-Ocean Shores (Marine Area 2): Open seven days per week from June 21, either through Sept. 30, or 37,300 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 23,940 Chinook.
Ilwaco (Marine Area 1): Open seven days per week from June 21, either through Sept. 30, or 50,400 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 18,330 Chinook.
All option one seasons include a short period of coho non-retention in June.

Option two: 112,500 Chinook and 115,000 marked coho.

Neah Bay (Marine Area 4): Open seven days per week from June 28, either through Sept. 30, or 10,050 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 13,360 Chinook. No Chinook retention east of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line beginning Aug. 1.
La Push (Marine Area 3): Open seven days per week from June 28, either through Sept. 14, or 2,510 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 2,230 Chinook.
Westport-Ocean Shores (Marine Area 2): Open seven days per week from June 28 either through Aug. 2, or 35,740 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 22,320 Chinook. Beginning Aug. 3 through Sept. 28, open five days per week (Sunday-Thursday) or until the quotas and guidelines are met.
Ilwaco (Marine Area 1): Open seven days per week from June 25, either through Sept. 30, or 48,300 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 17,090 Chinook.
Option three: 92,500 Chinook and 85,000 marked coho.

Neah Bay (Marine Area 4): Open seven days per week from June 28, either through Sept. 8, or 7,420 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 11,230 Chinook. No Chinook retention east of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line beginning Aug. 1.
La Push (Marine Area 3): Open seven days per week from June 28, either through Sept. 8, or 1,860 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 1,880 Chinook.
Westport-Ocean Shores (Marine Area 2): Open five days per week (Sunday-Thursday) from June 29, either through July 24, or 26,420 marked coho subarea quota is met with a subarea guideline of 18,770 Chinook. WDFW approves five days of coastal razor clam digs beginning Nov. 1; more tentative digs planned through 2024
OLYMPIA, WA – November will kick off with razor clam digging opportunities on four coastal beaches, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) shellfish managers confirmed today.

“Our first fall storm arrived this past weekend, but that didn’t stop diggers from braving the elements and trying to get a limit,” said Bryce Blumenthal, WDFW’s recreational razor clam manager, “Hopefully the weather gives us a break for this next tide series from Nov. 1-5.”

The Washington Department of Health (DOH) requires testing of razor clam samples for marine toxins, and domoic acid levels must fall under the guideline level before a beach can open for digging. Domoic acid, a natural toxin produced by certain types of marine algae, can be harmful or fatal if consumed in sufficient quantities. Final approval usually occurs a few days to a week before the start of each dig series. More information about domoic acid, as well as current levels at ocean beaches, can be found on WDFW’s domoic acid webpage.

The following digs during evening (p.m.) low tides will proceed as scheduled, after marine toxin results from DOH showed razor clams are safe to eat:

In fall beaches still have a lot of sand built up, which can make driving hazardous. WDFW asks diggers to drive carefully on the uppermost part of the hard-packed sand, avoid wet sand, and not to create congestion leading on and off the beach by parking on the approaches.

All diggers 15 or older must have an applicable fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach. Licenses can be purchased from WDFW’s licensing website, and from hundreds of license vendors around the state. WDFW recommends buying your license before visiting coastal beach communities.

WDFW approves five days of coastal razor clam digs beginning Oct. 3
OLYMPIA – Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) shellfish managers confirmed today, the first round of razor clam digging opportunities at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, and Mocrocks beaches from Oct. 3-7.

“It’s very exciting to get back to razor clamming again and begin the 2024-25 season,” said Bryce Blumenthal, a WDFW coastal shellfish biologist. “It’s common to encounter some small clams this early in the season, so we want to remind everyone that the rules require each digger to keep their first 15 clams regardless of size or condition in their own separate container.”

In early fall the beaches still have a lot of sand built up, which can make beach driving hazardous. WDFW asks diggers to drive carefully on the uppermost part of the hard-packed sand, avoid wet sand and not to create congestion leading on and off the beach by parking on the approaches.

Diggers heading out to Copalis on Friday or Saturday need to be aware that Highway 109 is closed west of Hoquiam and there is a detour via Highway 101 North and Ocean Beach Road.

The Washington Department of Health (DOH) requires test samples for marine toxins, and domoic acid levels must fall under the guideline level before a beach can open for digging. Domoic acid, a natural toxin produced by certain types of marine algae, can be harmful or fatal if consumed in sufficient quantities. No digging is allowed before noon during digs when low tide occurs in the afternoon or evening. Most successful digging occurs between one and two hours before the listed time of low tide.

All diggers age 15 or older must have an applicable fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach. Licenses can be purchased from WDFW’s licensing website, and from hundreds of license vendors around the state. WDFW recommends buying your license before visiting coastal beach communities.
