Tonight, we gathered for our annual Firefighter Appreciation Banquet, an evening dedicated to fellowship, reflection, and recognizing the incredible individuals who serve our community throughout the year.

Our annual banquet brings together Santuck firefighters and their families, members of neighboring departments, commissioners, and other valued members of our community. We also have the privilege of welcoming individuals whose lives have been touched by our department throughout the year, giving them an opportunity to share their stories and celebrate alongside the very people who were there to help. This year we were blessed to be joined by the log truck driver from the MVA on September 25th.

One of the most meaningful traditions of our banquet is the announcement of our Firefighter of the Year. This honor is voted on by our members to recognize a firefighter who has demonstrated exceptional dedication, hard work, and a commitment to making a difference in our community. This year's recipient is our Assistant Chief, Andrew McCullers! Congratulations, Andrew, and thank you for your continued leadership, dedication, and service to Santuck Fire Department and the community we proudly serve! Your hard work does not go unnoticed!

We are truly blessed to have such dedicated, selfless individuals who continually give their time and effort to protect and serve others. This banquet gives us a moment to pause, reflect on the calls answered, the challenges faced, and the lives impacted throughout the year. It is a reminder that behind every response is a team of individuals willing to show up when their community needs them most.

Tonight's banquet was especially meaningful because many of our firefighters had spent the day responding to weather-related calls and arrived exhausted. While they could have chosen to rest and relax at home, these dedicated individuals continued to show up for one another and our community. Their willingness to serve, even after a long and demanding day, is a true reflection of the commitment and selflessness that define our department.

Santuck had a busy morning taking care of storm damage. We even helped one of our own who had trees and a fence down resulting in neighboring cows free-roaming their yard.

SITUATION OVERVIEW
------------------

Hurricane Isaias will continue to move towards the Northern Gulf
Coast, making landfall Friday evening. Winds will gust as high as 40
to 50 mph late Friday night through Saturday, with the potential for
isolated higher gusts to 60 mph, resulting in the potential for
numerous downed trees and power lines. All of Central Alabama is
under Tropical Storm or High Wind watches and warnings. Rainfall
amounts of 1.5 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts up to 5 inches
will result in the potential for flash flooding, especially in urban
and other poor drainage areas. A threat for isolated tornadoes may
develop across portions of Central Alabama along and east of the track
on Saturday, mainly east of Interstate 65. Confidence is low to medium
at this time.

POTENTIAL IMPACTS
-----------------

* WIND:
Protect against dangerous wind having possible significant impacts
across southern portions of Central Alabama and higher elevations.
Potential impacts in this area include:
- Some damage to roofing and siding materials, along with damage
to porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. A few buildings
experiencing window, door, and garage door failures. Mobile and
manufactured homes damaged, especially if unanchored. Unsecured
lightweight objects become dangerous projectiles.
- Several large trees snapped or uprooted. Several fences and
roadway signs blown over.
- Some roads impassable from large debris, and more within urban
or heavily wooded places.
- Scattered power and communications outages, but more prevalent
in areas with above ground lines.

Also, protect against hazardous wind having possible limited impacts
across the rest of Central Alabama.

* FLOODING RAIN:
Prepare for dangerous rainfall flooding having possible significant
impacts across Central Alabama. Potential impacts include:
- Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt several evacuations and
rescues.
- Rivers and tributaries may quickly become swollen with swifter
currents and overspill their banks in a few places, especially
in usually vulnerable spots. Small streams, creeks, and ditches
overflow.
- Flood waters can enter some structures or weaken foundations.
Several places may experience expanded areas of rapid
inundation at underpasses, low-lying spots, and poor drainage
areas. Some streets and parking lots take on moving water as
storm drains and retention ponds overflow. Driving conditions
become hazardous. Some road and bridge closures.

* TORNADOES:
Protect against a dangerous tornado event having possible significant
impacts across eastern portions of Central Alabama. Potential impacts
include:
- Several places may experience tornado damage with a few spots
of considerable damage, power loss, and communications failures.
- Locations could realize roofs torn off frame houses, mobile and
manufactured homes demolished, large trees snapped or uprooted,
and vehicles tumbled. Dangerous projectiles can add to the toll.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

* EVACUATIONS:
Follow the advice of local officials.

* OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION:
Now is the time to check your emergency plan and emergency supplies
kit and take necessary actions to protect your family and secure your
home or business.

When making safety and preparedness decisions, do not focus on the
exact forecast track since hazards such as flooding rain, damaging
wind gusts, and tornadoes extend well away from the center of the
storm.

If in a place that is vulnerable to high wind, such as near large
trees or in a mobile or manufactured home, plan to move to safe
shelter.

If you live in a place particularly vulnerable to flooding, such as
in a low-lying or poor drainage area, in a valley, or near an already
swollen river, plan to move to safe shelter on higher ground.

Check on those who may not be fully aware of the situation or who are
unable to make personal preparations.

Closely monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio and local news outlets
for official storm information. Listen for possible changes to the
forecast.

There is a threat from tornadoes with this storm. Have multiple ways
to receive Tornado Warnings. Be ready to shelter quickly.

Training tonight: Safe lifting techniques

Tonight, Santuck personnel did some hands on training with the stair chair, backboard, and mega movers. Doing this training ensures that our members are comfortable moving patients from point A to point B safely and effectively without causing potential additional harm to the individual being moved.

We are so grateful to have the incredible members that we do that are willing to put hands on and train for better, more successful outcomes on scene where it matters most!

We are incredibly honored to announce that Santuck, Eclectic, Redland, and Friendship Fire Departments have been awarded a grant through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program to purchase new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA).

This award is an investment of nearly $1 million in life-saving equipment for the chosen recipients. SCBAs are critical pieces of personal protective equipment for firefighters as it allows our firefighters to breathe in filtered, clean air in hazardous and oxygen-deficient environments.

SCBAs are essential devices when entering dangerous environments for those striving to protect lives and property. Whether a firefighter is responding to a structure fire, vehicle fire, or another emergency where hazardous conditions are present, having reliable respiratory equipment is critical to allowing our responders to safely perform their on-scene duties.

We offer our deepest appreciation to the AFG Program for this generous award and their recognition for this need so that our firefighters have access to the equipment essential to safely serve the Santuck community. THANK YOU!

Last night, at 21:16 PM, Santuck was dispatched to the 10,500 block of Central Plank Road for an MVA — Log truck versus Jeep Gladiator. The call initially came in with the information of a single vehicle overturned. We also received word from an off-duty Haynes employee stating that the driver was entrapped. It was not until units arrived on scene that we realized the vehicle overturned with entrapment was the log truck.

The driver of the log truck was swiftly extricated, assessed, and loaded into LifeFlight. The Jeep Gladiator had three patients, two adults and a young child, who were also assessed. All patients but the young child were transported by the Haynes Ground crew for further assessment and treatment.

Due to the gravity of the situation, it took various agencies to successfully work this scene such as: Santuck FD, Seman FD, Wetumpka FD, Haynes Ground, Haynes LifeFlight, EMA, ALDOT, ECSO, ALEA, Jones Towing, Powell Towing, etc. ADEM was also notified due to a diesel fuel spill on the scene.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who showed up to make this scene run smoothly so that each agency can work together to efficiently complete the tasks at hand.

Today, Santuck's fire hose underwent testing to assure that our equipment operates reliably during emergency responses. This annual testing assesses for any leaks, tears, and/or worn out areas of the hose. Hose testing not only helps us keep our firefighters safe from incidents, such as the hose bursting from high pressure operations, but it also keeps us NFPA compliant.
