Tonight's Training: Power Line Safety

Tonight was a quarterly meeting amongst our mutual aid departments, Buyck, Real Island, and Seman, where we gathered together at the Santuck Community Center to learn about Power Line Safety from Central Alabama Electric Cooperative. Fire Departments often respond to trees on power lines and/or power lines down. It is imperative that we learn how to safely respond to these calls so we can protect ourselves and the public from getting injured due to such calls.

Extreme Heat Risk 🥵

Be weather aware and stay safe!
▫️Limit outdoor exposure for you, your family, and pets, especially during the hotter parts of the day; Cancel outdoor activities, if possible.
▫️Stay hydrated (with water!)
▫️Stay in places with adequate A/C cooling capabilities
▫️Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
▫️Know and be able to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke

While Alabama does experience hot summers, this is not your typical Alabama heat! Extreme heat risk like that of today is rare, even in the South! Our bodies are not adapted to handle this kind of heat! We urge you to please take caution!

Elmore County Cooling Stations for the Extreme Heat Warning tomorrow. Please stay weather aware!

For Monday, August 17, 2026, the National Weather Service in Birmingham has placed Elmore County under an EXTREME HEAT WARNING. Elmore County EMA has identified the following locations will be open as “Cooling Stations” on Monday during the times listed below. Citizens, please note that cooling stations are not long-term shelters but are places to cool off for a short time. You should bring all items to sustain yourself, such as food and water. All animals MUST be in a crate.

Wetumpka area:

At 15:50 PM, Santuck was dispatched to a 3-vehicle MVA at the intersection of Georgia Road and Haynes Road. Upon arrival, all patients involved had self-extricated from the vehicles. Santuck personnel assessed all four patients and determined that only minor injuries had been sustained from the collision. Haynes Ground later arrived on scene where all involved refused transport for further assessment.

Deputies were on scene throughout the duration of this call and assisted with directing traffic since the northbound and eastbound lanes were blocked due to the position of the vehicles involved in the MVA.

The State Trooper later arrived to investigate and document the scene. Powell’s Wrecker Service arrived shortly after and towed the Chevy Traverse from the scene. The other two vehicles were able to be driven from the scene.

Santuck personnel then cleaned up the remaining debris and opened up the roadways. The scene was cleared and all remaining units went back in service.

We appreciate the other agencies – Haynes, ECSO, ALEA, Powell’s Wrecker Service – for their assistance in making sure this scene ran smoothly. We also appreciate the cooperation and patience of the members of our community while we worked to clear this scene and get the roadways opened back up safely.

Training Last Night: Driver and Pumper Training using the Alabama Fire College simulator.

Members of the Santuck FD sharpened their skills through hands-on Driver/Operator and pumper operations training using the Alabama Fire College's state-of-the-art fire apparatus simulators.

This simulator allows firefighters to safely practice emergency vehicle driving, pump operations, water supply, and critical decision-making in realistic scenarios without putting personnel or equipment at risk. Training like this helps build confidence and proficiency before those skills are needed on the fireground.

At Santuck, we believe that training never stops! Every hour spent preparing helps ensure that we're ready to provide the safest and most effective service to our community when the next call comes in.

We appreciate the Alabama Fire College for making this outstanding training resource available and for their continued commitment to developing Alabama's firefighters.

At 15:40 PM, Santuck was dispatched to a two-vehicle MVA on the 3100 Block of Central Plank Road. Both vehicles were headed Northbound on Hwy 9. The Toyota Camry came to a stop as they were waiting for the vehicle in front of them to turn left into a driveway where they were then rear-ended by the Hyundai Elantra.

Haynes Ground and deputies were already on scene when Santuck personnel arrived and both patients were already out of their vehicles. The driver of the Elantra was loaded up and transported to the hospital for further assessment, whereas the Camry driver was transported by family.

Santuck units later received permission to move the vehicles out of the roadway by the State Trooper. Santuck units left the scene with the state and returned to service.

Training: Driver Obstacle Course

We have been covering Driving Operations in the classroom and finally put wheels down on the obstacle course tonight!

We focused the driver training on our brush trucks tonight. We took the time to go over each individual brush truck to get our members familiarized with the pumps, equipment, etc. before setting off for the course. We aim for our members to not only get comfortable driving, but also operating our trucks. As you can see, we have several different brush trucks that all drive and operate differently. We want our members to be capable of utilizing each and every one of them!

Brush truck driver training is just the beginning! We plan on moving up to our tankers and finally to our pumpers to allow members time to get comfortable and confident with each truck in our fleet!

At 12:11 PM, Santuck was dispatched to an MVA on the 6800 block of Central Plank Road. The vehicles involved were an 18-wheeler and a pickup truck hauling a gooseneck trailer. This incident occurred close to Santuck Station 1. The truck hauling the trailer ended up in a ravine around 200 yards past the station after impact, but the 18-wheeler did not come to a stop until Powell Loop Road. A Deputy nearby heard the collision and was the first on scene where it was determined that the driver of the pickup truck was entrapped and unconscious.

Santuck personnel called for Wetumpka FD as additional resources were needed on scene. Santuck and Wetumpka FD then worked in tandem to stabilize the vehicle in the ravine and extricate the patient. Santuck personnel, Elmore County Deputies, EMA, and ALDOT helped with traffic control so that a landing zone could be established for LifeFlight. HWY 9 was completely shut down prior to LifeFlight landing safely in front of the fire station. The patient driving the pickup truck was extricated from the vehicle soon after the helicopter landed. The patient was then loaded and transported.

Concurrently, the driver of the 18-wheeler was assessed by the Haynes Ground unit.

Once LifeFlight had taken off with the patient, one lane of HWY 9 was opened. The other lane remained closed until the towing company was able to retrieve the truck and trailer from the ravine.

Thank you to all the agencies who came to our aid on this scene and thank you to the members of our community for your patience while we worked to care for the individuals involved in this MVA. We work to clear our scenes as quickly and efficiently as possible, but MVAs like this one take a lot of moving parts and time before considered to be under control.
