This pair of Sandhill Cranes has been hanging out in my yard for a few days. I assumed that they were looking for grubs in the neighborhood lawns. I saw them score a double on these small mammals and I thought they were finding the Meadow Voles in our lawn. When I cropped the pictures on my laptop I could see that they were catching Northern Short-Tailed Shrews. After this they found and consumed 2 more. They will eat anything small that they can catch and swallow. The whole time that they were hunting a pair of Red-Winged Blackbirds were dive bombing them. I guess that they had a nest nearby.

I stopped through Fermilab in Batavia yesterday to get some spring Bison calf pictures. There were 7 that I could see. It was interesting to see how the invasive European Starlings follow the Bison eating ticks and other insects that they stir up. I also saw a few Whitetail bucks showing their new velvet covered racks that they grow so fast each summer.

Check out this giant Snapping Turtle that I saw in Glen Ellyn today at Lambert Lake, Most of the other turtles like the Painted Turtles and Red Eared Sliders see me and dive off of their sunning logs when I am 10 yards or more away. This Snapper stood his ground in it's typical hunting mode. He blends in like a rock or a log and waits for prey to walk or swim too close. Snappers account for a lot of ducklings and will grab full grown ducks and muskrats and drag them to deeper water to drown them before ripping off pieces to eat.

Don't watch this 2 minute video if you are easily offended. Last week when I was filming these Sandhill Cranes I thought that the parents had caught a frog to feed to their young. In the past I have seen them feed worms, slugs, beetles and other insect life to their c**ts. This time it looks like a Mallard duckling was on the menu.

Lambert Lake in Glen Ellyn today. There was a pair a Killdeer with 2 newly hatched chicks running around on the gravel service road. The camouflage on the chicks blends so well with the gravel. Good thing there wasn't any traffic because the chicks would sit down on the road and freeze when frightened.

This is a 1 minute video of a pair of Sandhill Cranes and their 2 c**ts today. The c**ts are only a few days old at this point and can keep up with mom and dad. It was very windy today and you can hear that in the camera's microphone.

Yesterday I was at St James Farm and encountered this Coyote in the Horse and Hound cemetery. He casually walked back into the woods after a brief stare down. As he passed by I realized that I saw this Coyote twice during the winter at St James and Blackwell, He had a case of mange in March in the older pictures, It looks like the end of his tail is missing due to frostbite.

Today I was on a ladder cleaning out a clogged downspout and a Robin kept flying around me. It was obvious that she was agitated with my presence. I was looking in the nearby tree to see if there was a nest. I looked down and saw this nest on a nearby downspout under the soffit. I stuck my phone over the nest to see if there were any eggs and captured this chick being born.
