Every year in late August and early September the Nighthawks migrate through our area. Sunday and Monday were overcast and raining when the birds flew over. Last night was perfect for some clear pictures over the back yard. They were flying high up and fast, but I managed to get a few close ups after cropping.

I could watch these Sandhill Cranes all day. They were in the yard when a neighbor's barking dog alerted them. Then they all started into this dancing and displaying. Pretty cool. The video is about 1 minute long.

I heard The Sandhill Cranes in the backyard this morning so I went out to see them. They came up to the deck and I noticed that today we had 6 of them visiting. Only 5 of them are on the video because I had to trim the video length.

The four-foot-tall backyard murder birds were back today. I saw that the Sandhill Cranes were poking at something, so I grabbed my camera. I didn't know what kind of small bird it was until an adult Starling carrying food kept dive bombing the Canes. The Cranes could have easily killed and ate the fledgling but they seemed more curious than hungry, After tossing around the young Starling for a few minutes the Cranes lost interest and moved away. The adult Starling came back to feed the fledgling.

If you have a Mulberry tree in your yard you know how the berries stain everything, your shoes, sidewalk, etc. They also attract every skunk and raccoon in the neighborhood. On the positive side the berries support a lot of other wildlife, All these pictures are from 1 Mulberry tree at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville.

The local Sandhill Cranes returned to the backyard today, Some of the grass was still saturated from the heavy rains from 2 days ago. They were probing for earthworms and grubs in the soft turf. You can see how deep they dig by the mud and their mandibles.

Yesterday I stopped through Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville and saw a pair of Osprey fishing over the lake, One of them gave me a close fly by while the other was chased off by a Red Winged Blackbird. There are 3 nesting pairs of Osprey located within a few minutes of Blackwell.

This pair of Sandhill Cranes has been hanging out in my yard for a few days. I assumed that they were looking for grubs in the neighborhood lawns. I saw them score a double on these small mammals and I thought they were finding the Meadow Voles in our lawn. When I cropped the pictures on my laptop I could see that they were catching Northern Short-Tailed Shrews. After this they found and consumed 2 more. They will eat anything small that they can catch and swallow. The whole time that they were hunting a pair of Red-Winged Blackbirds were dive bombing them. I guess that they had a nest nearby.

I didn't have to go far to see this pair of Sandhill Cranes. I could hear them calling from inside my house and found them in the neighbor's yard. Near McKee Marsh today.

I stopped through Fermilab in Batavia yesterday to get some spring Bison calf pictures. There were 7 that I could see. It was interesting to see how the invasive European Starlings follow the Bison eating ticks and other insects that they stir up. I also saw a few Whitetail bucks showing their new velvet covered racks that they grow so fast each summer.
