Frontier recently opened up over 200 houses in Roodhouse in just the last couple of days for sale. Frontier visited city hall yesterday to get a solicitor's permit for a local technician there to go door-to-door to get the word out. Below is a special QR code for them to scan which will take them to a site to determine if service is available, see different service options, and sign up for new or updated service. (attached below).

PLEASE NOTE that there are some people that may show eligible right now in Roodhouse that don’t yet have available service. The hub was lit up in its entirety however due to permitting Frontier hasn't been able to get fiber installed across the railroad tracks until that process has finalized. The affected locations are shown below. Frontier is trying to get those removed from the system until they actually have available service so there’s no confusion but it may not be done before the weekend is out.

Impacted addresses by the railroad permit that will not qualify just yet despite showing eligible:

Here is the monthly update on the Frontier fiber internet project.

Ervin Cable Construction and their subcontractors continue to make good progress on installing fiber across the county. One of the biggest challenges to the schedule right now is getting approval of the railroad permits to install fiber across the railroad right of way. Ervin Cable Construction and Greene County Economic Development Group are in contact with the Illinois Office of Broadband and others to try to get these approvals expedited.

Most of the work in September was on the “feeders” that support the distribution across the county. Think of these as the large branches on a tree that provide support for all of the smaller branches and leaves. The main hubs for service are the wire centers in each of the communities and the service for the communities and the rural areas branch out from these hubs. Getting thise installed first is a requirement to provide broader service across the county
- Greenfield, two feeders are targeted for completion in October.
- Roodhouse, one feeder was completed in September and one feeder is on track for November completion.
- White Hall, two feeders are targeted for October completion.
- Carrollton, one feeder on track for November completion.

Work has begun on the distribution routes in the communities across the county. These are the “smaller branches” from the feeders that provide available service to homes.
- In September, one distribution route was partially completed in Roodhouse providing available service to 136 homes. Service to another 77 homes is delayed pending approval of a railroad permit.
- In October, Ervin is targeting availability for approximately another 290 homes in Greenfield and 264 homes in White Hall.
- In November, they are targeting availability for 125 more homes in Roodhouse and 35 homes in White Hall.

It appears that the construction is on schedule to provide most of the county with fiber internet service from Frontier sometime in the first half of 2026 – PROVIDED that the railway right of way permits are attained in the next 30-45 days. If that doesn’t occur, there will be a delay in availability of service in areas that require cables across the tracks.

We’ll provide another update next month and more details as homes can begin to connect.

Here is an update on the Frontier fiber internet project. We’ll attempt to provide more regular updates going forward now that construction is underway.

• Most of the work in the past months has been to update the distribution (circuit) centers in the communities that provide the overall connections for the county.

• Work has begun installing distribution lines in Roodhouse with service available for some homes at the end of September.

• Work has also begun installing distribution lines in Greenfield with service available for some homes sometime in October.

• Some feeder lines from Greenfield, White Hall, and Roodhouse should be completed by the end of September. These feeders are the primary mainlines that will support distribution routes throughout Greene County.

It’s been a long road to get better internet in Greene County. But the efforts are beginning to become reality. Thank you for your support and patience. We will try to provide more details and info in the future.

The GCEDG met yesterday with Frontier Communications and Ervin Cable Company to get an update on the projects for Greene County. Here’s the update. Its gonna get real over the next 6-12 months

29 May, 2025
Construction on Broadband Projects Accelerates in Greene County, Illinois

The Greene County Economic Development Group (GCEDG) met today with Frontier
Communications to discuss the timeline and permitting for the fiber internet projects in the
county. Over 1 million feet of fiber cable will be installed in Greene County by the end of 2025
covering most of the county. The remaining projects will likely be completed in the first half of
2026. When all the projects are complete, over 500 miles of fiber will provide available service
to over 4500 locations across Greene County.

Frontier recently installed fiber in and around Carrollton providing fast, reliable internet to residents of that community. A significant number of residents in that area are experiencing great internet service with significant cost savings.

Work has begun in both Roodhouse and White Hall to prepare the switch hubs for fiber
installation in those communities and the rural areas across the northern part of the county. In
addition, the engineering design is complete for Greenfield and the surrounding areas to provide
for installation later this year. Frontier has contracted Ervin Cable Construction to complete the detailed surveys of the current service infrastructure, revise the engineering plans, and install the fiber network. Ervin Cable is a premier fiber contractor with an excellent reputation for quality
and timeliness.

From telehealth to online education and more, residents and businesses impacted by these projects will benefit greatly from Frontier’s fast, reliable fiber connectivity. Service will be
provided at very competitive rates, with detailed pricing and speed options available at
Frontier.com/shop. When this new service is available county wide, the financial impact of the
savings for the citizens in Greene County is estimated at over $1 million per year.

The Greene County Broadband Project has been supported by Illinois state and federal
legislators, the Greene County Board, and municipal/township leadership as well as with
significant support from the citizens of Greene County. Everyone recognizes and
anticipates the dramatic impact that fast, reliable internet will have for the lives and
opportunities of the families, businesses, and citizens across the county. This new service
will be a reality for most of the citizens by the end of this year and all projects should be
completed by mid 2026 making Greene County one of the most connected counties in the
state.

It has been a while since we provided an update on the Greene County Broadband Project.

There are 6 active projects and one completed project with Frontier that will cover most of Greene County with fiber internet.

The first project installed fiber to Carrollton and some of the surrounding areas. Service is available and you can contact Frontier to get connected. They were recently offering 500 mb service for $29.99. This includes the cost of installation and a wireless router for your home.

Two projects are focused on Roodhouse and White Hall. The engineering is completed for these projects and work has begun in the wire center in each of these communities. New equipment must be installed in this hub to support the fiber internet. Once that is completed, the work will begin to install the fiber to the community. Most of the new fiber will be installed on the existing overhead poles in the community. There should be very limited requirements for installing underground fiber.

There are four projects that will cover rural Greene County - North, West, East, and South. This will provide fiber internet to virtually all of the rural locations in Greene County. The one exception is Rockbridge and some of the surrounding area. This community is served out of Macoupin County and we're still working with them to get a project committed for this area as well. The engineering design for the 4 rural projects is underway and should be completed in the next couple of months. Then construction can begin on those projects as well.

This has been a long process. But we can see the end coming. By the end of 2026, virtually all of Greene County will have fiber internet available at very competitive prices. We all look forward to connecting our homes and businesses with fast reliable internet.
