I know the first sign of spring in the Piedmont woods when I see redbud trees blooming. They’re always the first in late winter!

My grandmother referred to them as “Judas trees” as lore has it that Judas Iscariat hung himself from one after betraying Jesus’ location. It actually wasn’t the same species but a closely related species that occurs in the Middle East. Bible / tree trivia for the day.

A widely planted ornamental tree is causing huge problems as birds eat and spread the seeds and it takes over areas far and wide.
Bradford pear is an undesirable ornamental and should be removed and replaced with a better species (see comments of article).

An accurate summary of the tough times the Georgia Timber Industry is facing.

Since International Paper abruptly closed its mills in Liberty and Chatham counties last fall, business owners in Southeast Georgia who once made the state the largest timber exporter in the nation have been feeling acute pain. Turkey populations have declined and controlling the animals that raid their nests is needed (along with creating good habitat for all life stages of turkeys).
Turkeys nest on the ground and often easy to find by possums, raccoons, armadillos and others. When found, they’ll eat every egg and the hen turkey may or may not be able to nest again.
Controlling these “nest raiders” is often a critical piece of the puzzle to help turkey populations.
Trapping is a pretty effective tool (steel traps and dog-proof ones). If this post gains enough interest, I’ll make another one on effective trapping methods.

With an increasing wild pig problem in Georgia, some hunters attempt to shoot them on sight or deploy the “single pig” traps. The reality is this does more harm than good, since it educates the hogs to run from man or steer clear of the single pig trap. Trapping the entire sounder is the only effective way to control these nuisance animals who can reproduce exponentially.

There are several effective trapping systems and I’m not advocating for one vs another but encourage land managers to do your homework as you develop a strategy against these unwanted critters!

Some trees are in higher risk areas (dirt road with many houses) and stopping traffic is necessary. Veteran tree cutting man getting it done here.

If you own 30 acres or more of pasture or crop land and considering planting trees, this program can help pay all the planting costs and provide an annual payment. Cutover timberland is not eligible for cost share
