TL;DR
Create with your clients in mind = design with your audience in mind = present with shareability in mind
---
Guys, I’ve just hit a personal milestone. It’s a silly one. For the first time I’m presenting a bunch of my past work to an audience other than my husband and a few Instagram friends *hi*.
The client project ends when you deliver the files to your client. Your marketing starts right there. That’s when you should publish all the mood boards, collages, stories, to bring a whole different side of that finished project into the world.
Yes, I’ve not been showing my designed pieces because... well, I don’t know why. Probably because I didn’t know where to start.
Do I want collages where everything is neatly arranged? Or slides for people to tap through? Would people even want to see my stuff?? (Short answer to that: yes!!)
So in order to not go crazy, I started at the beginning and made a list of places and platforms I want to show my stuff on. Just like I would do with any other design piece, duh!! Sometimes one can’t see the forest for the trees...
Here’s the list:
✨ My portfolio page
✨ Instagram stories (and keep them in the highlights)
✨ Pinterest
All of those platforms would support multiple boards, but I wanted to keep it simple for me (and my people) to share.
That one little aspect, the sharing, made it fairly easy to decide on the format: it would be a tall collage.
The moral of the story: be very clear on your intentions and goals when you start a new design.
If this insight into my life as a graphic designer saves one person the headache of trying to make a decision and not knowing where to start, I can go to sleep a happy human tonight.
