Commonly asked question is do gravel driveways need periodic maintenance and how much? The answer is yes and there are a lot of factors that need to be considered of how much maintenance it is going to need.

Just a few factors are, how much daily traffic consisting of cars or heavy trucks, slope/steepness, drainage conditions, water table and one of the most damaging is how many heavy rain storms do you receive.

Here is a driveway that was done by us two years ago. Two years ago it had deep gorges and washouts as the water was not able to get off the side of the road. We came in and shaped the driveway, dug ditches to remove the water away from the road and placed ledge-pack. The photos don’t do justice to how steep this driveway is, which is very difficult to keep from washing out with heavy rains.

This time the driveway had no washouts or gorges and the homeowner wanted it refurbished and reshaped due to the winter plowing and rainstorms before it needed major maintenance.

Grass growing in the driveway is another question. Unfortunately grass will grow in the gravel in areas where it does not receive traffic. One item I recommend to use both helps the driveway stay solid and helps keep the grass away is calcium chloride. Calcium chloride keeps the moisture in the gravel to help the fines (small dirt particles) of the material remain locked in and prevents growth of grass.

Here are some photos of the reconditioning before and after. We added a thin layer of ledge-pack on top and this time the client had the the area around the house completed.

This customer needed room to park his and his friend’s trailers so they can enjoy the north county. We removed the sod down to good substrate, added 40’ of culvert for drainage and then placed 230 tons of gravel compacting in lifts. The sod removed was placed to back the gravel sides and sloped for easy mowing.

Customer wanted this area cleared of the large rocks, stumps and the trees that were left laying down on the perimeter moved to a different site location. Their expectations was for it to be a field area that could be mowed yearly.

This is a lot that was clear cut many year ago and growing back in. Very rough cutting as land still had stumps, large rocks and ruts, which also made it impossible to get cut close to the ground, due to those conditions.

This is not the normal type of work we usually agree to do, but it was the best fix for the situation. Customer wanted to take up old broken up asphalt and replace with gravel. I expressed gravel would work, but due to the hill, the water runoff coming off the pavement, it would cause excess maintenance to keep the gravel in good shape. We took up old pavement, removed tree roots, placed a gravel base and spread 8 ton of asphalt.

This driveway is both steep and long. The driveway was weathered from many rainstorms and had vegetation growth. It was a perfect example of a driveway that had perfect material hidden below the vegetation that was reconditioned to bring the driveway back to an almost original state without bringing in costly material.

The customer said he had spent the last several years fighting with potholes and they just kept coming back. They said they filled them with stone and gravel many times with no luck. We use an attachment that grinds the road and cuts the surface below the pothole to get rid of them. These photos show the before and after, before gravel was brought in to topcoat the roadway.
