This simulation learning example shows the importance of "Stand Alone" behavior vs. "In Series" behavior with respect to station downtime. If we have a station that is rated at 95% availability and capably of producing 60 units per hour; we would expect a Net average of 57 JPH. Yet when we place 10 of these station in series we lose 19 JPH and only produce less than 38 units per hour!
How do we design and protect against such a loss?
Can we achieve one piece work flow and be lean?
Do we have sufficient resources to be lean?
What is "Protective Capacity"?
Do we require buffers and what size?
Do we require an "Over speed" or a "Push"?
The above is a TimeView gnatt chart of the various accumulated station states: Green (Working), Yellow (Waiting), Red (Blocked), Blue (Down). You can clearly see the accumulating "Stair-stepping behavior" of the "Waiting" state, and the opposing "Block" condition that exists in the upstream stations. In contrast the stand alone "Station 1" has no performance issues, just its 5% downtime.
