The 2026 PicPoul Blanc vintage is coming along nicely, albeit 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Growing Degree Days in Texoma is trending ahead of last year. Time will tell, at this point we are very excited for Harvest 2026!

Yesterday was a great day to spray our grapevines for fungus protection… very little wind, mid 80’s temps, dry ground. It’s been a relatively dry last two weeks, but forecast rain for last night and today drove us to spray in anticipation of rain (it’s Black Rot, Downy Mildew & Powdery Mildew season here, just after bloom). We got good coverage out last evening and it rained about an inch over night. The systemic sprays should be well absorbed, we’ll reapply the protectant (surface coverage) sprays this week when the wind is under 10 mph.

While spraying grapevines last evening, Lisa and I tracked a large thunderstorm cell passing to our northeast over SE Oklahoma and NE Texas, observing it both visually and via radar on our phones. The display was quite impressive. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the lightning within the storm cell became particularly dramatic!

The high degree of activity in the vineyard this winter & spring is paying off. We’re actually ahead of schedule for - I’m sure - the first time ever! Having a crew of well-trained pruners from Atlas Vineyard Services do our final pruning and borrowing the Hartman’s tractor / rake to gather the clippings helped immensely. Thank you to both, another example of the great grape growing community that exists in the Texoma AVA!!

Yesterday was a memorable day in the vineyard, starting out with a joyful visit of 5 young whitetails frolicking near the pond, full of life, throwing caution to the wind, chasing each other in a jubilant display of energy and joy. Later as I was preparing for fine pruning in the PicPoul Blanc block, Jack the Vineyard Dog - constant companion & encourager - took off in a dead run towards the trees, head up eyes open. A full grown coyote rocketed away towards the pond and then our property boundary. Jack was so excited! Still later, flaunting the coyote, a pair of roadrunners visited while I was resting in my side-by-side. I had never heard the sound they make clacking their beaks together, you can hear it at the beginning of this video. I read it’s a locating call for their mates or chicks, but I think he was taunting the coyote, his own way of saying… “Beep - Beep”!

Buds are breaking at Breaking Bud Vineyard!! The most hopeful time of the year, my favorite time of the year! New life, growth after dormancy and a fresh start with boundless opportunity & possibilities! 💪

These breaking buds are on distant parts of the canes that will be pruned off next Monday Those buds that remain (abide, as in John 15) will be much closer to the main branch and will form the foundation for the 2026 harvest. This is an early bud break, so prayers for no more freezes!!

My focus this week is lowering the side nets giving the pruners access to the vines. Jack the Vineyard Dog is supervising. While he is always encouraging, the look on his face communicates his frustration that I am not throwing his ball often enough to suit him.

The initial signs of spring are creeping into the Texoma landscape - wild plum trees flowering, bees gathering pollen and grass greening (bud break can’t be too far off) - and driving us to complete pre-pruning efforts in anticipation of final pruning in mid March. I’m lowering hail nets on a perfectly gorgeous late winter day with a chorus of songbirds inspiring me on to completion.

Looks like this video was shot in black and white! I really enjoy a good snowstorm..., but only for about 15 minutes, then I'm ready to get back to southern weather!
