t has been a busy month for everyone. New bees have arrived and hopefully successfully installed. Monitor growth and be prepared to act on that progress. What do you want to do? Grow your hive, get a little honey, or increase your apiary. Answering these questions now is essential to you achieving your goals. The long term forecast is showing plenty of rain so understand how this also affects your decision moving forward. We will discuss some of these topics at the next Learn with the Beekeeper next Tuesday the 9th.

Thanks to Kasey for stopping in for a quick hive inspection today. Capped drone brood is in the late stages. Primarily in double deeps. Smaller amounts in the singles. We did see live drones today but very few. Seems like a lot of honey stores and tons of pollen. Off to a good start but it is how you finish that counts.

If you have not purchased bee equipment (woodenware) get started. Shopped yesterday and lots of 8 frame equipment specifically is all on back order. Some orders have lids but no bottom board and vice versa. Lots of places are low due to high demand.

Had the opportunity to inspect a couple hives that were not mine today. I observed increased laying and lots of drone comb. Drones are important if you are doing walk away splits or raising queens. Swarming will increase once the drones emerge and become mature (about 14 days). Seems like a lot of honey reserves but do not be fooled, check you hives.

Completed a quick inspection of all my single deeps. There are small amounts of brood but lots of honey and pollen. It appears there is not enough room to lay. To create more room for laying I will take out a frame or 2 of honey and replace with empty comb. Hopefully this will get the Queen laying more to build up a larger population for the spring and summer.

There will be some pretty good temps this week that will allow us to get out into the bee yard. Finish up winter work. Check for food stores and the build up of brood. This is also a good time to feed if needed but do not over feed.
