💢 THE ECONOMY ISN’T JUST GROWING OR SHRINKING. IT’S SPLITTING.

It’s called a K-shaped economy, and if you live in a rural community or own a small business, you need to understand what that means.

While one part of America is watching wealth grow through home equity, investments, and assets, another part is struggling just to get on the first rung of the ladder.

Baby Boomers hold nearly half of U.S. household wealth.

The median first-time homebuyer is now 40 years old.

And nearly half of Americans ages 18–29 received financial help from someone outside their household last year.

But here’s the part I want rural communities to pay attention to:

When younger generations can’t build wealth, rural communities don’t just lose consumers. We risk losing entrepreneurs, homeowners, employers, taxpayers, and future community leaders.

And small businesses feel that divide from BOTH directions.

Customers have less disposable income.
Entrepreneurs have less personal capital to invest.
Access to credit becomes even more important.
Hiring gets harder.
Homeownership gets delayed.
And businesses in communities already lacking investment are expected to somehow “bootstrap” their way to growth.

Meanwhile, people who already own assets are gaining more wealth from those assets.

That’s the K. One side is climbing. The other is fighting not to slide backward.

This is why rural economic development cannot simply mean recruiting the next big company to town.

We have to talk about entrepreneurship. Access to capital. Financial literacy. Workforce development. Homeownership. Business ownership. And local wealth creation.

Because a community cannot build a strong economy if the people who live there have fewer and fewer opportunities to own anything in it.

And THAT is the conversation rural America needs to be having.
