You probably know that there are 88 keys on a piano. But did you know that there are over 230 strings?!

Yup! Almost all of the mid and high range notes have three strings for each key! The allows for a big rich sound, but it also creates some challenges.

In tuning a piano, One of the biggest challenges is getting each of the 88 notes to sound clean and pure. This is done by attempting to make each of the three strings on each key sound *exactly* the same.

In the “before* recording here, the piano is out of tune. Strings conflict and the sound waves beat against each other, creating a dirty tone.

After the tuning, they are much more pure, creating a prettier more focused sound.

I’m Tempted to start showing up for tunings looking like this. (Not the attitude - just the style). Not only is it kinda fun, but it might point up the old-school nature of the work.

My ex’s father was a chimney sweep who showed up in the traditional outfit (think Mary Poppins - “Chim Chimney”). It got him a lot of publicity.

You can clean the outside of the instrument yourself, but please leave the inside to us.

A dusty old piano gets a nice cleaning!
This fine white dust is likely from someone using an ultrasonic humidifier in the same room. (We'll talk about why that is a bad idea later). But the truth is that pianos just get dusty over time. I can help!
Please, never use any sort of household cleaning product near the strings or tuning pins of a piano. Wax, oil, accelerants, and lubricants can permanently damage strings, and render the instrument untunable.
Feel free to gently clean the outside of the case - and even the keys - with a damp microfiber cloth. For heavier cleaning, I recommend the Cory Care line of products. Contact me with any questions about which products are right for your piano.

I’ve been working with a new style of tuning called “Perfect 12th”.

It would be way too nerdy to get into exactly how it is different from a standard “Equal Temperament” Tuning, but here’s an example of what it sounds like on a beautiful Yamaha C7 grand.
