Before you commit yourself to another round of strategic planning, consider this.
In most organizations, the tool of strategic planning is accepted as gospel. We might scrutinize the use of all our other organizational tools, but conventional strategic planning—including its SWOT analysis, stakeholder interviews, themes, goals & objectives—is almost never challenged.
But conventional strategic planning overlooks a HUGE piece of the puzzle: thinking.
It’s not difficult to update goals and objectives. Nor is it difficult to make operational plans that appear to turn these goals into a reality.
The hard part is figuring out HOW to connect goals with plans.
This is what we call The Missing Middle. The Missing Middle is the part where companies must collectively THINK about HOW to meet a new goal.
All your competitors are updating their goals, too, using the same tool you’re using. So unless you can THINK differently from them, the best you’ll do is keep on pace.
To grow faster than your competitors, what’s needed is a mechanism to create stronger ideas.
Want to grow sales? So do your competitors. Before you make plans, THINK harder about HOW you’ll do it differently.
Want to capture a new market segment? So do your competitors. Before you make plans, THINK harder about HOW you’ll do it differently.
Before you commit to strategic planning, ask: will this tool really make us different than our competitors?
