On September 27, 2022, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the 2023 premium and deductible amounts for the Medicare Part B program.

Medicare Part B Premium and Deductible

Each year the Medicare Part B premium, deductible, and coinsurance rates are determined according to the Social Security Act. The standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B enrollees will be $164.90 for 2023, a decrease of $5.20 from $170.10 in 2022. The annual deductible for all Medicare Part B beneficiaries is $226 in 2023, a decrease of $7 from the annual deductible of $233 in 2022.

Prescription drug coverage (Parts A, B, and D)
Medicare coverage overview

While Medicare Part D covers your prescription drugs in most cases, there are circumstances where your drugs are covered under either Part A or Part B.

Part A covers the drugs you need during a Medicare-covered stay in a hospital or skilled nursing facility (SNF).
Note: If you are getting SNF care that is not covered by Part A, your drugs may be covered by Part D.
Part B covers most drugs administered by your provider or at a dialysis facility, but the provider or facility must buy and supply the drugs. Part B also covers some outpatient prescription drugs, mainly certain oral cancer drugs (chemotherapy). Outpatient drugs previously paid for by Part B will continue to be paid for by Part B. Part D cannot pay for any of your drugs that are covered by Part B.
Part D covers most outpatient prescription drugs (drugs you fill at a pharmacy). Check your plan’s formulary to find out whether it covers the drugs you need.

Your Medicare coverage options
There are 2 main ways to get your Medicare coverage—Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage.

*Original Medicare:
Includes Hospital (Part A) and Medical (Part B) insurance.
If you want drug coverage, you can add a separate Drug plan (Part D).
You can also add a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy to help pay your out-of-pocket costs.

*Medicare Advantage Plan
An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare.
These "bundled" plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D.
Most plans offer extra benefits—like vision, hearing, dental, and more.

Q: I just enrolled in Medicare a few months ago, and now I am hearing about Fall Open Enrollment coming up. What is Fall Open Enrollment, and what should do I do during this time?

A: What an important question! Fall Open Enrollment begins October 15 and ends December 7 each year. (You also might hear it be called Medicare’s Open Enrollment Period or Annual Election Period, AEP for short.) During this time, you can make changes to your health insurance coverage, including adding, dropping, or changing your Medicare Advantage and Part D coverage for next year. Even if you are happy with your current health and drug coverage, Annual Enrollment is the time to review what you have, compare it with other options, and make sure that your current coverage will meet your needs for the coming year.

You can make as many changes as you need to your Medicare coverage during Annual Enrollment. The changes you can make include:

Joining a new Medicare Advantage Plan
Joining a new Part D prescription drug plan
Switching from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan
Switching from a Medicare Advantage Plan to Original Medicare (with or without a Part D plan)
You should consider:
Your access to the health care providers you want to see
Your access to preferred pharmacies
Your access to benefits and services you need
The total costs for insurance premiums, deductibles, and cost-sharing amounts
If you have Original Medicare, read the 2023 Medicare & You handbook to learn about Medicare’s benefits for the upcoming year. You should review any increases to Original Medicare premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance charges.

If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan or a stand-alone Part D plan, read your plan’s Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) and/or Evidence of Coverage (EOC). If you do not receive these notices by the end of September, contact your plan to request them. Review these notices for any changes in:
The plan’s costs
The plan’s benefits and coverage rules
The plan’s formulary (list of drugs your plan covers)
Additionally, make sure that your drugs will still be covered next year and that your providers and pharmacies are still in the plan’s network. If you are unhappy with any of your plan’s changes, you can enroll in a new plan. If you want assistance reviewing your options contact a licensed professional who specializes in Medicare eligibility.

Even if you are happy with your current Medicare coverage, consider other Medicare health and drug plan options in your area. For example, even if you do not plan to change your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, you should check to see if there is another plan in your area that will offer you better health and/or drug coverage at a more affordable price. Research shows that people with Medicare prescription drug coverage could lower their costs by shopping among plans each year; there could be another Part D plan in your area that covers the drugs you take with fewer restrictions and/or lower prices.

I am a licensed agent in the states of Kansas and Oklahoma. I specialize in Medicare eligibility and retirement. Call or text me for your annual review.
