First Run of the Blichmann Brew System

Today we fired up the Blichmann Brew System for the first time. Overall, it was a productive equipment day and a good opportunity to learn the system's quirks before putting it into full service.

One issue that quickly became apparent is that the system needs to be moved to a larger electrical circuit. A trip to Lowe's is in order so I can upgrade the breaker to a 30-amp circuit. Looking back, I'm not sure what I was thinking when I purchased a 20-amp two-pole breaker, because I definitely know better.

The brew pump also required some attention. I had to dismantle it and persuade it that "no" was not an acceptable answer. After cleaning and reassembling it, the pump is now operating as it should. As an added measure, I installed a backup brew pump from one of my smaller systems so there is a spare available if needed.

For testing, I ran the heating element at only 80% power. Even at that setting, the temperature rose quickly from 72°F to 99°F, which was encouraging and demonstrated that the heating system is working efficiently.

There are still a few improvements to make before the first full production batch. The brew hoses will benefit from pipe insulation to reduce heat loss, and the electrical service will be upgraded to a 30-amp breaker to allow the system to operate at its full potential.

To finish the day, I filled both the mash tun and brew kettle with sanitizer and circulated it through all of the hoses, fittings, pump components, and thermowell. Everything was cleaned, sanitized, and tested, leaving the system in good shape for the next phase of commissioning.

All in all, it was a successful first day with the new equipment and another step forward for Windchaser's brewing operations.
