Got Tension?
We often hear about the need to remove tension from our lives. But is tension always a bad thing?
Sure, being âwound upâ all the time can create stress and burnout. But a life without any tension at all can be just as problematic.
Think about the belts in your carâs engine:
- If theyâre too tight, things break.
- If theyâre too loose, things donât work.
But when the tension is just right, everything runs smoothly.
Tension, when properly managed, is essential. Itâs not something to avoid â itâs something to balance.
Thatâs the idea behind John Maxwellâs âLaw of the Rubber Band.â He says:
âGrowth stops when you lose the tension between where you are and where you could be.â
A rubber band is only useful when itâs stretched. Too little tension, and it does nothing. Too much, and it snaps. But the right stretch? Thatâs where growth happens.
Feeling Stuck?
Whether itâs in a job, relationship, or just life in general â maybe youâre not unhappy, but you're not where you'd like to be. If that sounds familiar, try this:
1. Pause & Reflect â Where are you right now? Be honest with yourself.
2. Visualize the Possibilities â Where could you be? Dream a little.
3. Sketch a Simple Plan â You donât need all the details. Just the direction.
4. Take the First Step â Momentum starts with a single move.
Applying the right kind of tension can create the momentum you need to move forward â toward your potential, not away from it.
