This may be the final iteration of the EPOCH Analysis logo. The difference between this and the last iteration (two weeks ago) is subtle, but significant.

EPOCH Analysis was a finalist in a pitch competition that would have gotten $20k in startup grant money had this company been the winner. There were six finalists.

This grant would have been used to purchase laboratory equipment to start a small agricultural testing lab in a county where 40% of the land area is cropland and the nearest agricultural lab is more than two hours drive away.

EPOCH did not win.

But, I got a new nick-name, courtesy of the judges:

The pitch went well. I covered everything I wanted to cover in those three minutes we were allowed. The judges asked some questions that I couldn't answer well, in part because EPOCH hasn't started operations. I mean, we need lab equipment to run lab analyses. That's where my focus was.

I know I can build a lab that will support my rural county. And the judges agreed, but ultimately gave the money to another business.

After the winner was announced and congratulations were shared, two of the four judges came and talked to me. They thought I'd identified a clear need, but that I was taking the wrong approach.

Consulting, they said, was the path I should take. The lab can come later.

I'm not sure I fully agree. Yes, consultation would be an important part of EPOCH's offerings, but without a lab, how can I even start?

I'm eligible to try again next year. Until then, I'll try to launch the lab even without that grant.

And I'll enjoy my new job title.

Crop Doc has a nice ring to it.

If a person wanted to, say, outfit a simple geochemistry lab - maybe one focused on agricultural testing - where might a person look for low-cost instruments and equipment?

I dunno, like maybe a UV-Vis spectrometer, an atomic absorption spectrometer, a muffle furnace, and an elemental analyzer?

Additionally, where might one find funding to purchase these devices?

Doing a little work in the home lab tonight. These samples hold the secret to global warming that happened 39 million years ago or so.

A study in contrast. One of my extra-large rock samples collected for isotopic analysis (scale for scale, LOL) compared with the diamond drill bit I use to collect the samples. The drill bit is about 2 mm across.

I only need about 10 milligrams of rock powder for analysis - so about 1/10 the weight of an average paperclip.

Maybe I should grab smaller rock samples..?
