This stone bench was placed in front of the existing boulder two years ago. It was starkly white and quite unnatural looking. Now... it's growing on me 😉

The bench was painted with a blend of organic buttermilk, organic yogurt, different mosses, lichens and ferns from the surrounding woods.

Yes, it's a shady spot a good part of every day, but natural colonization of raw stone by mosses, lichens and ferns typically takes longer than this.

Moss gardens are a great way to plant otherwise difficult spots.

A little 'before and after' comparison. 2 years and a couple projects later, it's gone from a sterile, commercial-looking home to one with a rambling, colorful garden full of pollinators and 4-season interest.

I recently completed this project and thought I'd share it.
The wall and patio were designed by Walt Cudnohufsky, Walter Cudnohufsky Associates, Landscape Architects and Planners, Ashfield, MA. I truly appreciate being asked to participate in this project.

For those not familiar, this is Goshen stone. It's a locally prevalent schist high in iron ore. Thank you to Bryce at Sugar Ledge Quarry in Cummington, MA!

The patio is +/- 500 sq ft. The largest slab is 5'x7'x3" thick.

The wall runs 45' linear. 2' thick. 18" high on the patio side. Elevation slopes away from the house, but at it's highest point is 36" tall.

Used 13 tons of wall stone...

I'll find some before pics.
