Our hearts are with those affected by the Michigan State University mass shooting. Yesterday’s tragedy echoes the senseless gun violence across educational communities. On this day, we remember those whose lives were forever changed by the shootings in Parkland, Florida, and Northern Illinois University.

MSU authorities say the three people killed and five others hurt were MSU students. The suspect has been named.

The tragedy that occurred during a middle school basketball game reinforces the need to evaluate planning and preparedness initiatives for special events and after-school activities when many school leaders feel vulnerable.

A brawl broke out among spectators at a middle school basketball game in northern Vermont, and a man involved in the fight died, police said.

Director of K-12 Services, Rob Evans, works alongside Vermont’s Agency of Education and Department of Public Safety in response to 21 hoax calls. These calls hold little credibility, but induce great stress in our schools and communities!

At least 21 schools across Vermont received threats of school shootings on Wednesday, and police say all of them were hoaxes. That’s about 10% of the schools in Vermont.

Today is the 10-Year Remembrance of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. We remember the victims and their loved ones, and hold the entire Newton Community in our hearts.

Sandy Hook Promise trains students and adults to know the signs of gun violence so that no parent experiences the tragic, preventable loss of their child.
