Fall is here so it's time to prepare your outdoor power equipment for winter storage. You won't be using your lawnmower, string trimmer, or other "summer" equipment until next spring, so make sure it's ready to run when you need it next. Complete the following steps to prepare your equipment for winter storage.
1. Change your oil. Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature and then drain the oil. This prevents dirt and sediment that is in your oil from collecting at the bottom of your crankcase creating sludge.
2. Add a fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank. The gas we use from the pump may contain ethanol, damaging fuel lines and carburetors. Drain the old fuel from the fuel tank. Start your engine and let it run until it runs out of fuel and dies. Add fresh fuel with a stabilizer additive and run the engine for around 10 minutes.
3. Replace your air filter and spark plug.
4. Disconnect the battery if equipped.
5. Give your equipment a good wipe-down to remove any dirt and oil.
If you follow these steps, your equipment should have no trouble starting when you need to use it next spring.
