You’ve decided to take your show on the road and record some content outside of your studio. After recording your first set of content, you’ve realized that there is a problem… your video is shaky! We’ve all watched a video somewhere online that looks the person behind the camera was a first grader. There is a solution to this problem, and it is an easy one to come by as well. Getting yourself a gimbal will save you tons of trouble.

A gimbal is designed to keep your phone (or camera) level regardless of the motion around it. This is helpful in situations where you are on the go like walking down the street, trying to get that action shot while climbing some rocks, or simply just wanting to eliminate a shaky hand. In this article, gimbals compatible with your phones are going to be highlighted. First on our list, the DJI Osmo 6.

The DJI Osmo 6 is DJI’s newest handheld gimbal that offers a sleek and ergonomic design. Having such design reduces hand fatigue and reduces the likelihood of the gimbal slipping out of your hand while recording. DJI has also created software that accompanies the gimbal with editing tips, tricks on how to take a shot, and has face tracking so your shot never leaves the subjects face. This may seem like it will cost a fortune, but the DJI Osmo 6 rolls in at $159 USD. Next up on the list is the Zhiyun Smooth 5S.

Zhiyun is another competitor of DJI that offers a quality product. The Zhiyun Smooth 5S is their newest gimbal for handheld devices yet. Offering an intuitive panel control and built in additional lighting, makes this a force to be reckoned with. Not enough light with the built in lighting? Then there is the option for additional lighting that magnetically clips onto the gimbal. Overall the cost of the gimbal itself with the built in lighting is $169. You can always add on the additional lighting for an extra cost.

Overall, a gimbal may seem like just another added expense. But this is an investment into providing quality video content and bringing your show to the next level. Whether this is cross posting your podcast onto YouTube, to having plenty of superb film to create TikTok’s or reels from.

You’ve decided to take your show on the go, or want a wireless microphone for some of your social media marketing. At this point, it is safe to assume that you have searched wireless microphones and these two options popped up. There are advantages to a having a wireless microphone, but you want to make sure that you purchase one of quality to avoid connection issues. In this article, we will be comparing two of the best wireless microphones on the market. First up, we have the Rode Wireless Go Mic II.

Whenever microphones are mentioned whether it is for recreational or professional use Rode is easily on the list to be a top contender. Of course they were going to create a wireless microphone and they did. Then they created a second version of it - and that lands up with the Rode Wireless Go Mic II. The Mic II raves reviews from individuals that use if for all sorts of different purposes. From social media influencers, to podcasters, to videographers - it is a universally used microphone set that is relatively easy to learn how to use. Here are some other pro’s behind the Go Mic II:

- Dual Channel Wireless Microphone System - Enables the ability for two individual sound sources.

- 40 hours of onboard memory to store recordings

- RODE Central - Makes it easy to configure the settings of the microphones and to export your audio.

- Cheaper than the DJI Mic at $299

Although these are some wonderful attributes that reflect well on the Rode Wireless Go Mic II, there are some downfalls to it as well. Some of those would be:

- Unable to adjust the gain for individual microphones in real time. It has to be adjusted using the Rode Central application on a desktop.

- “Bulk” gain control could be more fine tuned, where you are able to hone in on that level of gain to capture quality audio for your audience.

- One of the other options on the market is relatively new, but is a solid product - that is DJI’s DJI Mic.

DJI’s version of a wireless microphone the DJI Mic is a game changer for the microphone industry. DJI has previously made plenty of technology used in the film and audio industry. Products ranging from drones to gimbals, they have now tried their hand at a wireless microphone and they did not disappoint. Some of the pro’s of the DJI Mic are:

- Magnetic clip for a hidden look to avoid that bulky microphone look.

- Individual gain adjustment in real time on the microphone’s receiver.

- Hard carrying case that also acts as a charger for the microphones.

- OLED touchscreen to adjust and monitor sound levels.

But with all the good things about a product, there are some bad things. A few con’s that come to mind would be:

- No low-latency mode for recording audio

- Potential for pushing multiple “buttons” at once when making adjustments on the receiver.

- Does cost more than the Rode Go Mic II, and comes in at $329

Overall, these products are both of great quality and sound. It just depends on what you are going to be using them for and how in-depth you want to get with your audio adjustments throughout your recording. Both have long range capability when recording, and offer an extended battery range.

Imagine yourself, you just finished recording another episode for your show. You have not looked at your downloads for a few days and feel optimistic that your numbers are going to have grown. Now you’ve opened up your hosting software and the feeling of disappointment sets in… your number have not gone up. First off, we have all been here. You feel like you’ve been killing it lately but you aren’t seeing results. Do not let this stop you and let you down, you have to keep going. This is the point where we need to take a step back and start to evaluate what you’re doing right and what you may be doing wrong. One thing that I found to be a problem, that I have personally experienced, is your niche. No your niche isn’t the problem, but how broad or narrow your niche is may be a contributing factor.

Your niche is the group or “market” of individuals that you are trying to appeal to and get to listen to your show. This is a crucial thing to hone in and figure out early on in your show because this group of individuals is a form of built in support group. Podcasting is a family, even if your show may be doing better or worse than somebody else within your niche; they are still going to be there for you and help you get to where you want to be. If your niche is too narrow, then your “family” or support group will not be as large and your resources may be limited.

Having a narrow niche is usually a problem that podcasters avoid, but it can still happen. This typically happens when you came up with your original idea and have narrowed it down to a specific audience. For example, if I were to start a podcast about critical care pre-hospital medicine and practices - I would stop right there because my niche is right at that happy medium where it is not too narrow or too broad. Let’s change that idea for a show to critical care pre-hospital medicine and practices to something along the lines of pre-hospital medicine and practices for clinicians in the Southwest Minnesota region. By doing this, you’ve alienated a very large portion of your audience and narrowed it down to a topic where you have a limited audience. Your show is intended to have an audience, but not one that limits it to an audience where you can “tap out” your audience. On the other hand, you can have a topic that is too broad and you can’t hone in who you need to market your show too.

The thought process of having a broad niche is adopted and modeled after shows similar to The Joe Rogan Experience or 2 Bears 1 Cave because they are appealing to everyone. Joe Rogan, Bert Kreischer, and Tom Segura all have one thing in common - that is name recognition. They have name recognition behind their names and have built their brands - this gives people the ability to hear a name or look at a logo and recognize which show/company it is. Take the Apple logo for example, most individuals can see that logo and it automatically assimilates with the Apple Corporation. If you are just starting your show, even if you have been doing it for a while, odds are you do not have that name or brand recognition. Without that, you have to ask yourself who your target audience is. If you answer yourself with “Well anyone and everyone” - that is not the right answer. Let’s go back one more time and take that podcast idea - critical care pre-hospital medicine and practices - and make that broader to try and appeal to a larger audience. Instead of that, we can take it and start a show on pre-hospital medicine. This may seem “narrow” to some, but for those that are in the world of pre-hospital care then you know that this can go down so many different avenues. We can ask ourselves “who is my target audience” - and in this case it would be pre-hospital providers. Once again, too broad. Of course, you want to be able to appeal and obtain the largest audience you can. In other words you need to thing smaller.

Honing in your show and finding that specific audience can take time, but you will know when that time is. This may be one of the more difficult tasks that you didn’t think of initially. It may be a stressful task to accomplish, but remember why you’re here. You had an idea and want to share your input on that idea. Let that drive you to the point where you can find your niche, and [ amplify ] your voice.
