Fall flowers like this aster are some of the last resources for pollinators. She is so happy with her pollen sack she has worked so hard for the colony.

How Bees Make Bee Bread
• Collection: Forager bees gather raw flower pollen on their bodies and pack it into pollen baskets on their hind legs, adding nectar and enzymes during transport.
• Stowage: Returning foragers pack the pollen into empty honeycomb cells inside the hive.
• Fermentation: Hive worker bees add more honey, saliva, and beneficial bacteria, then seal the cell with a thin layer of honey.
• Digestion: Lactic acid fermentation breaks down the hard outer shells of the pollen grains, making the nutrients much easier for the bees to digest than raw pollen.

Why It Matters for the Hive
• Protein and Nutrients: Bee bread provides essential amino acids, lipids, vitamins, and minerals that carbohydrates from honey cannot supply.
• Nurse Bee Development: Young worker bees eat bee bread to develop the head glands needed to produce royal jelly.
• Brood Rearing: The colony relies on this protein-rich food to feed growing larvae, maintain hive strength, and expand the population.
