Yesterday's fire was a significant event, involving over 100 firefighters and devastating approximately 660 acres. The response required countless hours of hard work, with many crew members from MSVFD staying on scene until 5:00 AM this morning.

Crews will continue to monitor the area into tomorrow, as stated in a recent press release.

We are incredibly thankful for the support of our community during this event. A special thank you goes out to Cayla Farmhouse Friends LLC for distributing ice and refreshments and providing much-needed community support. You are a true hero and we are deeply grateful!🙏

Following up on yesterday’s fire incident, we want to provide an update on the ongoing efforts in the affected area. According to the Forest Service, the fire is now reported to be 100% contained. However, fire crews will remain in the area to monitor a few hotspots and continue their mop-up operations to ensure the situation is fully under control.

We are incredibly fortunate that no homes sustained major damage or loss, a testament to the swift actions taken by fire crews. Their immediate coordination with local law enforcement and mutual aid partners allowed for the deployment of drone technology, which proved to be phenomenal in identifying potential fire spread right from the onset. Local law enforcement was dispatched promptly, assisting the fire department in assessing the situation and pinpointing hotspots.

Community members also showed remarkable resilience and teamwork, with homeowners actively watering their yards to protect their properties. Many utilized personal equipment, including bulldozers, skid steers, and tractors, to further mitigate risks.

A special thank you goes out to everyone who graciously donated snacks, food, water, and necessary items to ensure that our fire department firefighters were rehabilitated, hydrated, and safe during their efforts.

08:05 PM - Hwy 64 remains closed — Texas Forestry Service & Smith County ESD are on scene with heavy equipment .

6:15 PM - helicopter drops are being scheduled aircraft are on scene .

6:00 PM - State Hwy 64 remains closed to facilitate emergency vehicles and watering operations - this is a coordinate response effort . Multiple agencies remain on scene.

Fire has pushed west of VZCR 3412 toward 3416. If you live on 3416 please stay vigilant. If your you see fire or your home is in the path please call 911 to report or notify a firefighter and evacuate the area.

Attention residents: A significant grass fire is currently affecting the area near Van Zandt County Road 3406 and Highway 64. DPS has initiated a closure of Highway 64 near this area

A huge thank you to Titan Assembly LLC for their generous donation of two portable restrooms for our fire department! Recently, we had to condemn our old building due to its dilapidated condition, which posed hazards for our equipment and personnel. While transitioning to a new building has been a blessing, we’ve faced challenges in hosting community events without adequate restroom facilities.

These portable restrooms are not only a huge benefit to our organization; they also provide essential comfort for our members and the community during events. Ensuring everyone has access to clean and accessible facilities is important for participation. You truly realize how important restroom access is when you can't hold events that support our operations.

We’re excited to use these restrooms for fundraising and community events, and we are also planning to build an appropriate handwashing station to enhance our facilities further. With these improvements, we look forward to hosting many events and fundraisers in the near future!

• Persistent triple-digit heat and a mostly dry pattern will continue through the weekend and into early next week. High initial attack potential will persist across East Texas because of critically dry surface fuel. Continued degradation of moisture in high-risk fuels (juniper/oak, pine timber) will support a high volume of fuel-driven fire occurrence and could exhibit moderate to high resistance to control.
• Texas A&M Forest Service responded to 100 fires state-wide in the last 7-days. Fire response has continued to increase over the month, driven by continued hot and dry conditions. August is the normal peak of statewide wildfire occurrence annualy due to summer drying and hot temperatures.

The Van Zandt County Fire Marshal has made a recommendation to the commissioner’s court to enact a Burn Ban and they have just approved. The order has been signed and will be disseminated. It has been approved for a 60 day ban with the option for the Fire Marshal to cancel early if conditions improve. Please tell a friend!

Today, our volunteers proudly represented MSVFD at the Heroes of East Texas event, and we are truly grateful! Despite the heat, they went above and beyond—washing our vehicles, loading equipment, engaging with the public, and donning their gear to showcase the tools we’ve worked so hard to acquire. They also performed vehicle extrication demonstrations for the community.

They dedicated their weekend to our mission, taking time away from their families to make a meaningful impact. We are very thankful for their commitment and also want to recognize their family members for supporting them in their service efforts. These volunteers have proven time and time again they are not afraid of working in the heat, consistently showing up to training sessions, fire scenes, and community events.
