Sharing this beautiful message I received -- author unknown.

With the rest of the school year cancelled, students will miss 2.5 months of education. Many people are concerned about students falling behind because of this. Yes, they may fall behind when it comes to classroom education...

But what if...

What if instead of falling “behind", this group of kids are ADVANCED because of this? Hear me out.

What if they have more empathy, they enjoy family connection, they can be more creative and entertain themselves, they love to read, they love to express themselves in writing?

What if they enjoy the simple things, like their own backyard and sitting near a window in the quiet?

What if they notice the birds and the dates the different flowers emerge, and the calming renewal of a gentle rain shower?

What if this generation are the ones to learn to cook, organize their space, do their laundry, and keep a well-run home?

What if they learn to stretch a dollar and to live with less?

What if they learn to plan shopping trips and meals at home?

What if they learn the value of eating together as a family and finding the good to share in the small delights of the everyday?

What if they are the ones to place great value on our teachers and educational professionals, librarians, public servants and the previously invisible essential support workers like truck drivers, grocers, cashiers, custodians, logistics, and health care workers and their supporting staff, just to name a few of the millions taking care of us right now while we are sheltered in place?

What if among these children, a great leader emerges who had the benefit of a slower pace and a simpler life to truly learn what really matters in this life?

What if they are AHEAD?

10 Tips for Time Together

Here are ideas I shared in my monthly newsletter to help you and your family during our stay-at-home mandate. Wishing you all peace, wellness and sanity while we navigate these difficult times. My thoughts are with the doctors and nurses helping on the front lines, and all those parents now tasked to provide schooling and sports and activities on top of everything else!

1. Learn a new skill. The internet has limitless possibilities to learn something new – involve the family in learning a new language, craft technique or dance move!
2. Watch documentaries. National Geographic has awesome options. Inside Bill’s Brain is a three-part series that families with older kids might enjoy.
3. Enjoy nature. Our busy lives often prevent us from spending time in nature. Use this opportunity to take a walk through your neighborhood and notice the flowers and birds. Choose something in nature to study and catalogue. How many types of birds (or flowers or trees) can you find in a week?
4. Have a dance party. Play your favorite tunes and dance in the kitchen, in the living room, or on your front porch!
5. Plan a fashion or talent show. Organize a show with friends or family. Have your kids practice modeling their fashions or fine-tuning their talents. Then set the stage for a Zoom show!
6. Connect with others. Be intentional about connecting by phone or video chat with friends and family. Create a list with your kids of family or people in your community whom would benefit from hearing from you!
7. Create name art. Have your kids honor ways they are unique using name designs or acrostic art.
8. Make a scrapbook. Do you have boxes full of pictures or swim team ribbons? Have your kids help you organize these treasures.
9. Begin a meditative practice. Practice yoga, meditation, or simple breathing techniques. There are countless teachers offering classes via Zoom or YouTube to guide you.
10. Make time for your spouse or partner. This can be tough to keep on the list as you work to meet everyone’s needs, yet relationship deserves some attention too! Check out my interview in Marjie Killeen's Better magazine article: Love in the Time of Coronavirus: How to Stay Home Without Ruining Your Relationship. (Read to the end for parenting tips.)

Great insight regarding the struggle that many college kids face and what parents can do. Parents of high school kids can also benefit from this article. So many kids are ready academically, yet struggle with the social and emotional adjustment. Conversation and preparation can help!

Great NYT article supporting parents who struggle to manage their children's screen time and phone usage. There are few parents who aren't dealing with this issue today. My colleague, Rhonda Moskowitz, helps shed light on this issue.

Jason Gay has a great take on the college admissions scandal in today's 'What Others Are Saying' section of the Tribune. He concludes the short piece with: "There isn't a diploma in the world that's more valuable than your integrity--and you can't buy your integrity back."

A side door, they called it. A sewer pipe of entitlement is probably a better term of art. If you or your children earned admission to college the hard way, I am sorry. Those chumps who stay up all night with calculus, or slog through Faulkner, or...
