I am proud to have founded a company in which my family is involved. Working closely with family members has its challenges, for some it can even sound impossible. But to me, it is so fulfilling to build something meaningful together. Ellen has been key to the growth and success of this company.

In order for a family to succeed in a shared business, it’s important to set some boundaries. Respect is a key component for this type of business, but above all it is important to try to understand each other's needs, responsibilities, and expectations. You should always try to keep the work environment professional. My final advice is to try to avoid speaking about business matters outside the work schedule.

Business transitions can be complicated and stressful, if we are not aware of all the implications this process has. We have had great experiences helping several clients with this process, but we also had the opportunity to learn astonishing lessons from some clients.

When is the best time to exit a business?

Do not advance forward, if you still don’t have a clear vision of your objectives. A business exit can be a complex process, if it isn't done cautiously. Having no exit plan to follow can put at risk your business’s future and legacy.

Only when you have resolved every piece of the puzzle and you have answered all your inquiries is when it’s time to move forward accordingly to your plan. Not before.

Ellen Long

Ellen helps business owners build and sell profitable, fun, and family oriented companies. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from North Greenville University, her M.B.A. from Liberty University, and her CFP from Boston University.

She is currently a mentor at TekMountain, a tech incubator space in Wilmington, and a board member of Apay Financial, an app for managing student loans. Ellen is also a Women to Watch award winner, a graduate of the Leadership Wilmington Class of 2013, and a TEDx speaker: “The Journey To Enough: Finding Your Minimum Viable Happiness”.

What might work for someone can be different for you, so you must analyze how your company can get the best results. Ask yourself which opportunities you might be missing in order to optimize results.

Before taking action, it’s important to know what we really want to do and the results we want to have. Even prior to taking the first steps, you must know where you are going. If you embark on a quest without a plan, you will probably end in an unpleasant situation that can put your business at risk.

Having a plan will allow you to trace the path towards meeting your end goals. It will allow you to foresee any possible obstacles, but most importantly it will allow you to see which areas of your business need improvement.

Being able to see the big picture while simultaneously paying attention to each detail will allow you to grow in the desired direction.

Handling a family business involves learning how to manage conflict inside the family nucleus in a way that only good shared decisions are implemented. Having a healthy relationship with your family members will allow the business to achieve its full potential.

Sometimes this is easier said than done, but whenever a family conflict surfaces, actions must be taken in a respectful way, hearing carefully all members involved and taking special consideration towards the root cause of the issue.

A united family is fundamental because it provides love, care, support and a set of values that becomes part of the family heritage. Family members also help one another and share life's blessings and hardships. Your family has been the most important influence you have had throughout your life.

When there’s a family business, these values become the company’s culture. A company owned by a family is more than just a business... it’s actually their legacy.

It is vital to remember where you came from and to recognize the path that has taken you to your present. No matter what type of life you lead in the past or the challenges your business has had to overcome, realizing and understanding the circumstances of your own path will help you make the proper decisions that could alter, for a better outcome, the course of your life and business.
