10 Steps to a Successful Turn.
1) Stay Calm & Breathe - Remember, this won't last long
2) Make sure you have extra supplies on hand - there is nothing worse than running out mid-turn. It delays the process and sets you back on timing, tremendously.
3) Have an organizational board - I call this a vision board. Map out your entire turn before getting started. Know who is where, doing what.
4.) Make sure you hire the right crew for the job - this is tough because a lot of people talk a good game when it comes to numbers but you have to be a good judge of character. As well, hiring the right team for the job doesn't stop there. You have to keep your team going, boost morale, order food, celebrate long, successful days, etc. Treat them well.
5.) If it is a big issue, and can't be fixed right away, keep moving and come back to it. The key is to keep moving. Lollygagging and spending too much time stressing over one issue will set you back. And time is something that is not on your side during a turn.
6.) Keep everyone on the same page - Make sure your communication skills are above and beyond the norm during this time. Make yourself available at all times, to answer questions, give direction, etc. And be clear and precise in the information you give. There is no time for miscommunication. If you don't know something, do your best to find out so that you can relay accurate information to your team.
7.) Do not do go-backs until you have done all of your walk-thrus - there is no reason to be calling people back to the 1st building when you are still turning your last. Save go-backs for when everyone is done.
8.) Do not clean carpets first (I have seen people do this) - I don't think I need to explain why it is not a good idea to clean the carpets first, and then have painters and cleaners go in. SMH
9.) Take Breaks - you are going to need them.
10.) Keep morale up. Don't let others see you stressed. Believe it or not, if you get worried, stressed, aggravated, or mad....your team sees that and adapts to your frustrations, which will ultimately slow them down. Smile, even under pressure.
***And whatever you do, do not order pizza every day! You and your team will be in a corner somewhere asleep, lol**** - On a serious not, while pizza may be the cheapest way to reward a large crew, subs, and tacos work well too. Change it up a bit!
