A solar estimator calculates total costs for solar energy installations by analyzing project blueprints, material prices, labor requirements, and equipment needs. They bridge the gap between sales, engineering, and finance to create competitive, profitable bids for commercial or utility-scale renewable projects.
Core Responsibilities
Cost Analysis: Review architectural plans and electrical schematics to compute material, labor, and subcontractor expenses.
Bid Preparation: Build comprehensive bills of materials (BOM) and structured cost proposals for client bids.
Cross-Functional Support: Coordinate with project managers, procurement teams, and engineers to verify technical requirements and project scope.
Risk & Value Assessment: Evaluate historical data, market trends, and site limitations to find cost-saving alternatives without breaking safety codes.
Key Requirements & Skills
Technical Knowledge: Strong grasp of solar PV technology, AC and DC, 3-phase medium voltage civil/electrical work, and local energy codes that primarily pertains to commercial electricity.
Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in Excel alongside takeoff or estimation tools.
Education & Experience: A degree in construction management, engineering, or equivalent field experience, often backed by 3 to 5 years of commercial or utility-scale estimating background.
