Ansley gave a 5 star review for our work on her garage project five years ago. Three years later, she came back to add an update:

“Update: it’s been a couple years and my garage organization system is still working. If things become disorderly, I can quickly reorganize and get everything on track. Thea worked with me to ensure my garage works for the whole family. I have ‘a place for everything, and everything in its place.’ My kids can easily see where their stuff is and get to all of it. The things I need regularly are within reach. I am a widow, and Thea and Mark were sensitive about going through my late husband’s things. Not to mention, they’re just fun people to have in your home.

Four stories, a street too narrow for a box truck, and three days to clear it all...

No truck access meant truck and trailer (three careful trips). Trash out, hazardous waste out, donations routed. Some items went to ReSale Art in Portland so the client got money back for things they'd put years into.

The scope changed more than once, but the deadlines didn't. Not ours, not the realtor's, not the contractors', not the client's.

Why do organizing systems fail? Here's five reasons we see over and over:

1) We organize in a way that works for other people and their habits, but not for our own.
2) We think buying the right storage container will fix all our problems, without looking at the bigger picture.
3) We focus more on aesthetics than on functionality and purpose.
4) We don't take a good look at our volume of items compared to our goals, and we're not always willing to adjust.
5) We set spaces up for one person to maintain, instead of everyone who uses them. That makes the entire home one person's problem.

The fix isn't a better bin. It's simple systems that fit your lifestyle, not Pinterest perfection.

Six box trucks of donations came out of this one house!

We did a week of work across the house: the attic, the garage, and a back storage room. Furniture, clothing, bathroom items, food, and more was all donated to programs like Tigard Grange and Caring Closet, where it went straight to people who could use it.

Part of the job was a small pack-out: helping the client sort through what they wanted to bring to their new home. They moved with five boxes and a suitcase, and everything else was left behind for donation and outsourcing.

How do you know it's time to bring in a professional organizer?

Usually it's one of three things. You've reorganized the same space more than once and it keeps sliding back. You're running late more than you'd like, because finding what you need takes longer than it should. Or, you keep buying things because they're on sale and you're sure you're out, or because you honestly can't find the one you already have.

None of those mean anything is wrong with you. They mean the system isn't working, and a system is a fixable thing.

A consultation is where that starts. We'll walk through what's not working and what would. There's a path for home organizing, one for moves, and one for hoarding support, so you're talking to someone who does the specific thing you need.

We planned for half a truck of donations, and they filled a whole one!

Two spaces on this project: a front entry closet and a home office. The goal was simple: make both of them work better, and let go of as much as possible along the way!

That second part is where people surprise themselves. Once you're going through things with someone who isn't attached to any of it, the "maybe" pile gets a lot smaller ... hence the full truck.

What went back in was mostly what they already owned, moved to where it actually made sense. Almost nothing new was brought in. Two spaces that had been working against them now work for each of them.

The detail we're proudest of: a rolling plant stand, repurposed so the AC unit can be wheeled wherever it needs to go until it's installed. The client called it a stroke of genius. We'll take it.

First night in the new place: you've found the mattress but not the sheets, the kettle but not the mugs, and the box that says "bathroom" is somehow in the garage.

The difference between packing to leave and packing to arrive shows up on the first night after a move. When every box is labeled by contents (pictures, wall hangings, kitchen, linens, etc) and sorted by room, unpacking is a system. When they aren't, it's a scavenger hunt for the coffee maker.

Our Pack Out & Pack In service handles both ends of the moving process. The old space gets cleared, cleaned, and inspection-ready, which matters whether you're a renter getting a deposit back or a landlord turning a unit; the new space starts organized instead of inheriting the old one's chaos.

A home gym doesn't need a spare room, just the right amount of clearance.

The equipment in this garage was surrounded (boxes on the floor, bins stacked against the rack, bikes parked wherever they fit).

When you have to move three things before you can use something, you stop using it.

The storage got pulled to the walls and contained, shelving went up to take what was on the floor, and the equipment ended up with actual space around it. Nothing new was bought and nothing was added. The room just got sorted into the part that stores things and the part that doesn't.

Shelving built out to the full wall. Clear bins you can read at a glance. Every category in a consistent spot.

Nobody was told to get rid of anything. A collection this size can stay usable, it just needs a system built for the volume that's actually there.

An estate cleanout is usually the last task a family gets handed, and it arrives at the worst possible time.

There's no fast way through it. Every drawer holds a decision, and most of those decisions belong to someone who isn't here to make them. That's the real reason it takes as long as it takes, and why being rushed through it makes everything harder.

This home was cleared room by room over about two months. What could be donated was donated, what could be recycled was recycled, and things that still had life went to people who could use them. Very little of a house has to become waste when someone takes the time to route it properly.

The house is empty now, and ready for whatever the family decides comes next.
