Ever get a text saying you owe a toll or a package can't be delivered? Many of those come from ready-made scam kits sold online.

This week Microsoft and Health-ISAC, with partners in Japan and across the industry, moved to shut down a big marketplace selling those kits. Its tools were behind more than one billion scam messages since January.

That's good news, but more scam texts will still come. The safest habit stays the same:
• Don't tap the link.
• Open the official app or type the website in yourself.
• When in doubt, ask before you act.

YourTech can help your staff spot these with phishing awareness training and better email and text filtering.

Does your office use a VPN to let staff work from home? If it's Ivanti Connect Secure, it needs an update today.

Federal cybersecurity agency CISA says attackers are actively exploiting a new flaw in Ivanti Connect Secure to run commands without logging in, steal credentials, and take data. Ivanti's own checking tool may not spot it.

What to do:
• Find out which VPN your office uses and its version.
• Update Ivanti Connect Secure to the latest version right away.
• If there's any chance it was compromised, follow CISA's reset steps and change passwords for all accounts.

Not sure what your office runs? YourTech can check it with you and handle the update.

Heads up, New England shoppers.

Ahold Delhaize, the company behind Stop & Shop, Hannaford, Giant, and Food Lion, says it took some systems offline after a cybersecurity incident. Stores are open, but news reports say websites, apps, and online ordering have been down and online orders are being refunded.

When a big name has an outage, scammers move fast. Watch for texts and emails about:
• Refunds that ask for your card details
• Rescheduling a delivery
• Logging in to see your pay stub

Don't click links in messages you weren't expecting. Go to the store's website or app yourself.

Even the FBI got caught by a missed update.

The bureau says a breach that exposed personal details of thousands of its employees happened because a contractor didn't install a security patch that had already been released for the platform. The FBI has removed that contractor.

The lesson for the rest of us: updates only protect you once they're actually installed.

A few things worth checking at your office:
• Who installs updates on each of your systems, including software a vendor manages for you?
• How quickly do critical updates get applied?
• Can someone show you a report, not just tell you it's handled?

Want a clear picture of where your patches stand? YourTech is happy to take a look.

If Microsoft's account can get hijacked, so can your business page.

Last week, attackers took over Microsoft's official X account, which has more than 13 million followers, and used it to hype a fake crypto token. Microsoft locked it back down, deleted the posts, and is still looking into how it happened.

The takeaway for the rest of us is simple. Your business page is only as safe as the logins behind it.

A few quick wins:
• Turn on two-step login with an authenticator app or passkey, not text-message codes.
• Check who has admin access, and remove anyone who has moved on.
• If a business page suddenly starts promoting crypto or "free giveaways," assume it's been hacked.

A data breach hit close to home.

A Wallingford and Southington orthopedic practice, Comprehensive Orthopedics & Musculoskeletal Care, reported that 21,897 people's information may have been exposed. The Hartford Business Journal says the practice detected the intrusion on February 12. The files may have included Social Security numbers, government IDs, payment info, and medical and insurance details.

If you receive a letter about it:
• Be careful of emails or texts that copy the notice and ask you to click or enter personal info.
• A credit freeze is a solid next step.
• Sign up for any monitoring the practice provides.

And if you run a local business that keeps customer or patient data, make sure you can spot unusual access quickly. YourTech is here if you want a second set of eyes.

That meeting invite might be a backdoor.

Microsoft is warning about phishing emails that look like everyday stuff: meeting invites, Zoom updates, PDF files, RSVPs, job offers, even package delivery notices. Click through, and what you install isn't a document. It's real remote-control software, the kind IT teams use, quietly set up so the attackers can get back in.

Once someone clicks "Yes" on the Windows admin prompt, a second remote tool gets added in the background, and the attackers use that access to go after passwords and data.

The simple defense that worked: people who said "No" to that unexpected admin prompt stopped the install.

A few easy habits:
• If a "file" asks you to install something to open it, stop.
• Don't approve admin prompts you weren't expecting. Ask your IT person first.
• Know which remote tools your business actually uses.
