This Day in History: September 4, 1998 — Google Is Founded
On September 4, 1998, Larry Page and Sergey Brin officially incorporated a company that would completely change the way we use the internet:
Google.
Google actually began a few years earlier while Page and Brin were students at Stanford. Their original search engine was called Backrub, and it analyzed links between webpages to help determine their importance. Eventually, Backrub became Google—and the rest is internet history.
Today, Google has become such a normal part of everyday life that "Google it" is practically our default response when we need information.
Looking for somewhere to eat? Google it.
Need a plumber? Google it.
Looking for a nearby store? Google it.
Need a roofer, realtor, barber, bakery, hotel, or web designer? Google it.
And that completely changed the way businesses compete.
That's Where SEO Comes In.
Having a great website doesn't do much good if your potential customers can't find it.
When someone searches for something like:
"web designer near me"
"roofing company Lexington KY"
"plumber Wi******er KY"
"best restaurant near me"
They're usually looking for a solution, not necessarily a particular company.
That's why Search Engine Optimization matters.
SEO helps search engines understand what your business does and helps put your website in a better position to appear when potential customers are searching for the products or services you offer.
Your content, keywords, website performance, mobile experience, links, reviews, Google Business Profile, and overall digital strategy can all play a role in how easily customers find you online.
At Thoroughbred Innovations, we help businesses build websites that aren't just designed to look good.
They're designed to get found.
Because 28 years after Google was founded, one thing is pretty clear:
Your customers are searching. The question is whether they're finding you—or your competition.
What's the first thing you remember Googling?
