It is with heavy hearts that we share our condolences on the passing of Retired Captain Raymond Williams. Captain Williams touched the lives of many of us here at Octagon Cleaning & Restoration, and his passing is felt deeply across our team.

He was the kind of person who made an impression, someone who led with integrity, treated people with genuine care, and gave generously of his time to the community he served. That spirit stayed with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and with the Windham Police Department, the Falmouth Police Department, and the entire law enforcement community of Cumberland County during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Captain Williams. You will be missed.

You can't see the part that catches fire. 👇

It's not the stove. It's the inside of the flue.

Every time you burn, a tarry residue called creosote coats the inside of the chimney pipe. It builds up all season, it's flammable, and a chimney fire starts in there — where you'd never see it until it's already going.

Before the first fire of the season:

🔸 Get the chimney swept and inspected. Once a year, before the first burn. This is the whole prevention plan.

🔸 Check your clearances. Thirty-six inches between the stove and anything that can catch — furniture, firewood stacks, drying laundry.

🔸 Metal ash bucket, with a lid, stored outside on a non-combustible surface. Ashes hold live embers for days longer than most people expect.

🔸 Burn seasoned hardwood. Wet or green wood produces far more creosote.

None of it takes long, and it's all before the fun part.

Three feet, every side. Nothing that burns inside it. That's the whole rule.

Space heaters cause a large share of home heating fires, and the pattern is nearly always the same: something flammable was sitting too close.

What ends up in the circle without anyone thinking about it:

🔸 Curtains — the classic. They move; a heater doesn't know that.

🔸 Bedding, laundry, a coat over the back of a chair

🔸 Furniture, boxes, anything stacked against the wall

🔸 At the office: papers, a bag under the desk, the edge of a chair mat

Two more that matter just as much:

🔸 Plug it straight into the wall. Not a power strip, not an extension cord. If a cord feels warm, that's a problem.

🔸 Turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed. Most heater fires happen when nobody's watching.

Same rule at home and at work.

Go turn over your smoke detector. There's a date on the back. 👇

Most people test their detectors. Far fewer know they expire.

Every smoke detector has a manufacture date printed on the back or side. The sensor inside has a service life of ten years from that date — after which it degrades, and it may not detect smoke reliably even though the test button still beeps.

That's the part that catches people out. The test button checks the battery and the horn. It doesn't check the sensor.

So take two minutes today:

🔸 Twist the unit off the mount and find the date

🔸 Ten years or older — replace the whole unit, not the battery

🔸 No date at all? It's old enough to replace

🔸 One on every level of the house, inside and outside sleeping areas

Every October, same smell. 👇
