This Memorial Day we remember and honor the women and men that have fought to protect our country.

The first female aviators in the military were the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS) started and headed by Nancy Harkness Love and Women’s Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) headed by Jacqueline Cochran in 1942. These female aviators ferried aircraft, towed gunnery targets and test flew newly repaired aircraft. In August of 1943 the groups combined to form the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). During the 16 months the program operated, 1074 women gained their wings. The WASPs continued to ferry planes, tow gunnery in live fire training and some went on to train their male counterparts to fly the B-29 Superfortress Bomber.

We thank these women and the millions of other women and men who have proudly served their country and made the ultimate sacrifice.

With Memorial Day approaching, we took time to honor the legacy and service of Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) Sara Payne Hayden. Our Boston Chapter was joined members of the New England 99s, The Nor'Easters of Cape Cod Bay Chapter of Women in Aviation, the Women Military Aviators and the Massachusetts Business Aviation Association. We were very lucky to have 3 attendees that had personal connections to Sara and were able to share stories from her life with us.

Sara's journey with aviation began in 1943 while she attending a film and saw an advertisement for the Women Airforce Service Pilots that showed women ferrying airplanes for their country. She was so excited about flying that she went to see a recruiter the next day!

During her training in the WASP program, she learned to fly the PT-17, BT-13, AT-6 and AT-7. She was responsible for aircraft inspections after maintenance and would complete the test flights to ensure the aircraft were safe for cadet training. After the WASP program was disbanded in December of 1944, Sara continued to serve her country in the US Air Force Reserve and Women's Army Corps (WAC).

Sara's dedication to aviation and supporting female aviators continued her whole life. Sara was responsible for helping hundreds of WASPs and their families receive proper military recognition, paperwork and benefits for their service to their country. She played a role in petitioning the US Government to recognize the service of the WASPs which was finally achieved in 1977.

It is truly an honor to memorialize the lives Sara and the other 1073 WASPs who helped pave the way for future generations of female aviators.
