Last week in Marfa, Texas 🌵

I had the opportunity to co-facilitate a workshop at the Mimms Ranch alongside Dawn Hnatow, combining conversations around effective stockmanship and managing through drought.

Dawn focused on livestock handling, observation, pressure and release, and understanding animal behavior. I focused on drought planning and adaptive decision-making through a management lens — helping producers think through forage, recovery periods, herd decisions, finances, and resilience before drought forces the decision for them.

One of the things I love most about workshops like this is the conversation between producers. Honest discussions, hard questions, shared experiences, and people willing to learn from each other.

And honestly… there’s something special about standing in the middle of big country with ranchers talking about stewardship, animals, grass, and the future.

Huge thank you to the team at Dixon Water Foundation’s Mimms Ranch for hosting us and creating space for these conversations.

Connection requires authenticity.
Community requires confidentiality and safe spaces.
Communication is everything.

I’ve been reflecting a lot on leadership lately. A recent experience, and a call I attended yesterday. One thing that keeps coming up for me is how much the way we create space matters — often more than the content itself.

When expectations are clear, and people feel safe, something shifts. People lean in. They listen. They speak honestly. Trust builds. Community forms.

For me, this is where the Three C’s of Living Legacy really come together:

Clarity — setting expectations and agreements up front.

Confidence — creating the courage to speak honestly and listen deeply.

Communication — listening to understand, not just to respond.

I’ve seen how powerful this can be — and how fragile. When people don’t feel heard, they stop sharing.
When listening turns into responding or imposing, the community quietly erodes.

Leadership isn’t about having the right answers.
It’s about creating the conditions where the right conversations can happen.

Winter Solstice marks the longest night of the year—a turning point people have honored for thousands of years by watching the sun and the land. It reminds us that even when nothing looks different on the surface, a shift has already begun.

Winter is the season of stewardship through restraint. The land rests. Energy moves inward. Soil life rebuilds what the growing season spent. What appears dormant is not idle—it’s preparing.

The solstice invites us to do the same. To slow down. To rest without apology. To reflect on what this year taught us and release what no longer needs to be carried forward. This isn’t a season for forcing progress—it’s a season for listening.

And woven into this longest night is a quiet promise: the light returns. Days lengthen slowly, almost unnoticed at first, but with certainty.

Good stewardship honors both truths—rest and renewal.
The light is growing.
There’s no need to rush it. 🌱

In November, Keith and I hosted a Holistic Management International workshop on our farm. I had the pleasure of facilitating the session alongside Dawn Hnatow. Co-facilitating with Dawn was a lot of fun—our teaching styles worked seamlessly together.

I covered the Holistic Management Framework, Dawn dove into stockmanship, and Keith added real-world perspective while we were out on the farm.

A productive and genuinely enjoyable day.

In case we haven’t met yet…
I’m Linda — rancher, educator, and leadership coach. I support farmers, ranchers, and land-based organizations in making clear, confident decisions that strengthen their land, people, operations, and financial resilience.
My work blends Holistic Management®, leadership development, Maxwell DISC behavioral analysis, and my Living Legacy™ framework. I help producers and teams improve communication, navigate tough decisions, and build resilient, values-aligned operations with strong human, ecological, and financial foundations.
You’ll see me talk about leadership, communication, DISC, decision-making, grazing, clarity, and the people-centered skills that strengthen family operations and teams.
My husband, Keith, and I ranch in the Kansas Flint Hills with our sheep, cattle, chickens, horses, working dogs, and barn cats who take their supervisory roles seriously.
If you’re looking for coaching, DISC work, or leadership support to strengthen your operation’s resilience, I’d love to connect.

Thanksgiving dinner… but make it ranch animals. 😂🦃

If your family is anything like a ranch crew, you’ve already got every DISC personality at the table. So here’s what it looks like when Harp, the chickens, the sheep, and that one very serious horse show up for Thanksgiving:

🐂 D – Harp:
“We eat at 2:00. Not 2:07. Everyone line up, get organized, and let’s get this meal MOVING.”

🐔 I – The Chickens:
“I brought snacks AND a playlist!! Look at these napkins!! Look at this centerpiece!! Isn’t this FUN?!”

🐑 S – The Sheep:
“Does everyone have what they need? Is anyone cold? Who wants seconds? I can make extra rolls…”

🐴 C – That One Very Serious Horse:
“The recipe said 375°, not 400°, Carol. And yes… I brought notes.”

The truth?
Your family needs all four.
Your ranch crew needs all four.
Life needs all four.

• The Ds keep things moving.
• The Is bring connection and fun.
• The Ss make sure everyone feels included.
• The Cs keep the details from falling apart.

And once you know how each one communicates…
Thanksgiving gets a lot smoother.

(So does working cattle. But that’s a post for another day 😆)

👉 Tell me — which one are YOU at Thanksgiving dinner?

Tag your Aunt Carol, Cousin Jake, Grandma Sue, or Uncle Steve.

After a full week of calls, chores, projects, and planning… this is my favorite way to reset.

Out here, things slow down just enough to remember why we do this work in the first place.

Stewardship isn’t just about land and livestock — it’s also about ourselves.
Taking time to breathe, reconnect, and realign is part of the work, too.

🌿 What helps you reset for the week ahead?

Before we fix a grazing plan, we fix understanding.

Clarity comes first — then the spreadsheets, charts, and plans.

The families I work with don’t need more rules… they need shared direction.

🌿 Clarity before complexity. It’s how you turn stress into momentum.

When everyone understands the “why,” the “how” gets a whole lot easier.

What’s one area of your work or team that feels “overcomplicated”?
